Not a fan. Wanking over dissonant chords with no real root key is what i hear. But years ago i did admire the playing as well as the music.

The only one thing i can point out today that still holds true is Shawn Lane's always stellar execution and technique.

Judge me of you would like, but i would rather listen to Loomis, or this:

Now this guy drives me crazy. This makes it worse. :scared:

mindblowing...guys like this are on another level.....to a lot of people, it just sounds like scales and wanking......but, if you have a foot in the grave with technique and theory at all....it really blows shit out of the water when you see what they're doing....

some of it does sound mechanical, but, therein lies the beauty...when that soul and voice comes out....it's just fucking epic when it all meshes... to each his own.... i could def. learn a thing or two from any of these dudes and never complain.

WHAT THE FUCK is that effect on impelliteris' guitar around 2:00....sounds like the delay eachos are being whammyd up or something...tss tss... (chip chipperson)

It is a piano following the same arpeggiated chords as Chris - the dude is off camera to the left

Its not, all he has is reverb running through a marshall half stack - watch the other videos if you do not believe me. The pianist/keyboardist does a jazz fusion solo later on with the same effect. Chris is just playing over (under?) it.

To dismiss Shawn's playing as wanking tells more about you as a player/ listener then it does about the genius that was Shawn Lane.

Statements like this tell that you are a musical elitist, and that you believe you are superior than most because your tastes are more technical, difficult, advante-guard, etc.

BTW, there's a difference between using then and than in English grammar. Not knowing which is appropriate to use could also tell something about one, wouldn't you agree?

A one-letter spell check is the best you can do?  You have no idea where my musical tastes lie, Skippy.

I did more than that. Maybe you missed it?

Implying that someone who doesn't like the posted video "tells something about them as a player" denotes a negative connotation. Like, somehow, if they don't like music or playing like that, then they are inferior to those who do like it. It's music snobbery or elitism. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not true.

No spell check was used or needed. You miss-used then when you should have used the grammatically correct than. I figured one douchy post deserved another. :D

I won't call names, even though you do. It's immature.

It drives me nuts when people who are indoors refer to the surface under their feet as the ground. I always think, "It's the fucking floor! The ground is outside!"".

The English language is lost on most people. Who was it that said "We speak American"? Homer Simpson?
Kids these days sound like complete morons to me. Damn I sound old!

Sadly it is not just kids that suck at the english language. Many times i read statements on facebook/news feeds from friends with full 4 year degrees that fail at proper English. It is like they are so lazy they cannot even complete a full thought process/statement without taking shortcuts or thinking it through before saying it.

I believe what cell phones have done to people is even worse. Training people to have their noses in their cell phones at all times of the day and paying for that bad habit as well

Yep... I especially love when folks use the word 'done' instead of 'finished'. Turkeys get 'done' in the oven, and your homework's never 'done,' it's 'finished'. But I digress... SL was a sinister, bad-ass mofo.

I'm almost hearing two different players in this clip. Some of this is hard to listen to, non musical, playing nothing of relevence just awefull wankery Then other parts are musically brilliant both timing wise and note selection. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde would be a good name for this. I can understand someone not liking this piece.

Well going along with the above conversation I scored in the 98th percentile of all students my age who took english in high school, and had to write fun essays during my days of studying for my degree, although as the years have piled up and I have made 1000s of posts on forums over the years I have gotten to the point where I cbf typing grammatically correct phrases as I don't have the time.

That Impelliterri video sounds good to me, that I can get. I have his greatest hits cd, and to me, I really dig it, some killer 80s songs on there with some great (SLO?) tone.

Now that I have been judged about my tastes, I can "get" all the weird shit that Vai, Devin Townsend & Buckethead get up to when they play, but for the life of me when I listen to Lane all I hear is speed for speed's sake and to me it seems that there is no coherency with the band. Not that I can't appreciate the technique that it takes to play that stuff, but it just doesn't resonate with me. Even Jason Becker says things to me with his playing no matter what the speed.

I know I am not alone in thinking this way, and as I said no disrespect is intended with any comment I made, it is just the way his playing makes me feel.

RIP.

Sorry but much of that is heard every 11am on Saturday mornings at GC's across the country.

I think you're on to something there...kids have forgotten how to write or speak now that texting has blown up to level that it has. When they do speak, they forget how to form sentences or even enunciate words.

As for Shawn Lane, he's an amazing player who's talent I greatly respect, yet I find myself enjoying only a small percentage of his work.

Lots of what he did was sheer brilliance. But from watching many of his videos, also a lot of repetitive symmetrical patterns at warp speed moving across the strings and up/down the fretboard too.

Like most great players, his playing has great emotion at times and also much wank as well.

The thing I think a lot of people overlook is that every great player uses repetitive patterns and licks. Nobody is breaking out something new with every phrase. It just seems to get pointed out with the fast players more than others.
