My friend has an original run Sunn Model T. he believes his output transformer may have gone bad (no, i dont know the symptoms or reasons) and is going to call a tech.

as im up, i figured i would ask RT - where does one go to source a wound to spec, or close to it, transformer for older vintage amps like his Model T?

i have never looked into it nor ever bothered to read past threads on the topic.

I blew the PT in my '79 2203 and replaced it with a new Hammond PT from Antique Electronics. I can't hear a difference. I still have the original PT. MM wanted $500 and 10 weeks to rewind it. No thanks.

You can message Chris Merren or Brian Marstran and they might be able to do a re wind; I'd bet it'll be a good bit cheaper than MM. But, it seems to take a while for Merren to respond, not sure about Marstran. I do know that they are the top guys that vintage Marshall owners go to, for a replacement or advice on a re wind.

I sent Chris an e-mail about a wind 15 years ago.. still hasn't responded.

Oof....I do know someone here who did buy a real deal vintage PT that Chris had lying around, recently. But yeah, that's not good....

Not 15 years, but a year or so and no response. Marstran did respond, but was more interested in selling me one. He has Heyboyer rewind his it sounds like.

Chris is an enigmatic cat.

I remember dealing with him on MetroAmp forum back in the day.

Good times !

Merren might respond you just never know. It always seemed like when he did respond to me that I just caught him at the right time. If you do reach out to him, be brief, be concise. He doesn't like wordy emails. Mercury could rewind it for you too but it would probably be cheaper to buy their clone, even tho it is expensive itself.

IMO the OT is a bigger part of the tone so I'd want at least a good clone of it if not a rewind. I'm of the "it only hurts once" camp with stuff like this.

Chris is actually a nice guy. I use to go up to hang with him at his parents house in north NJ (this was 20 years ago). Would play through all of his amps and cabs. The crazy thing was his parents house was like 3 streets away from where my both my parents grew up. ?

I remember when he showed everyone on Metro how to connect a conjunctive filter across the power tube plates, and he swore up and down this was the key to Ed's tone.

:ROFLMAO:

HIs stock plexi sounded killer. Had a lot of gain straight in.

Chris called me a few times when I was trying to find out if an amp I had from a known fraudster had fake Merrens in it. And I bought some iron from him as a thanks for his help. Never could get him to respond again when I was doing subsequent builds and had to go with ClassicTones.
