Never played these side by side, I was able to play Josh Holmes' a couple years ago, wow like almost 10!! Never played a new one, any comments? Thinking about picking one up soon.

has anyone played an incredibly gaudy airbrushed pointy guitar through 2x412's with way too much gain in their parents house?
:boxer:

So no one has compared

The vintage ones look cool but are incredibly unstable, go out of tune every other minute, and have terrible intonation. The plastic crumbles off the pickup housings and body cracks are common.

The 90s reissues are maybe 5% better.

The 2000s reissue is significantly better but still has some stability issues. If you buy one, just accept that you are buying it as a gimmick and be ready to deal with the hassles. They might be major for you or they might be nothing. Just depends on your needs.

The old-growth lucite of the originals sounds much fatter and warmer than the modern lucite of the reissues. :D

On a serious note, the old ones had necks that warped if you just mentioned a possible climate/humidity change...many of them so badly they were unusable. The later reissues didn't have this issue to anywhere close to the same degree. Tone and feel are essentially the same. If you want one to play and gig, get a reissue...if you want one to collect and/or hang on the wall, get an original as it will most likely be a better investment.

Good question, I always thought that these guitars were cool, I guess it has something to do with seeing Keith Richards with them yrs ago. He always got a nice sound with em, but I never got to try one personally. I think that they were reissued twice , once in the 90's and then again in the mid 2000's for a brief moment. Only thing that got me a bit leary was that ampeg is owned by crate , and I dont think that the reissues have pickups made by dan armstrong like the originals and the originals came with extra pickups so u can switch out the pickups as u see fit. I have seen a few originals with cracks and such from over tightening the neck etc. U have to be able to pull a guitar off like that on stage also, keith can look cool with anything almost.
