I have a 40 GB ipod that will not hold a charge.

When I re charge it, I can get through maybe one song and it dies.

I believe I can sent it to Apple to have a new battey installed, but I am not positive.....haven't looked into it.

This thing is about 4 years old.

My question is:

Should I look into the battery thing, or just buy a new one and if I should buy a new one, what should I buy?

One of the main reasons I liked this thing is that I can load my entire CD/itunes collection on it and I have everything with me, so I don't need to fiddle with playlists.

This would still be a goal if I were to buy something new.

Please keep in mind....I am the ultimate end user of electronics gadgets. I really don't care about having the latest greatest, as long as it does what I am looking for (in this case, play my music with pretty good sound quality) and I don't care about having the next big thing. I just want something that will be easily compatible with my itunes and holds all my music....and sounds pretty good.

Thanks!

When my battery died I took it to the Apple store
and if I remember it was like $100,I wouldn't try it
myself however.

Not sure man, but a similar thing has started with my laptop computer.

Also I am trying to boycott buying an iPod, yet I've got GAS for an Apple Mini Mac...............

I was going through the same thing like two years ago. My battery wouldn't hold a charge for more than 30 minutes (not as bad, but still not good). I went ahead and bought an 80 gig. IMO you should buy a newer bigger one. You'll always get new music... well I do at least... so extra space couldn't hurt.

I've put new batteries in two or three of my ipods.

Pretty easy, but be careful. Waaaay cheaper than buying a new one.

That's like saying I need an oil change, should I buy new car? :D

this happened to my ipod a few years ago. if you can find a place called Batteries Plus, they're a fairly large chain store, take it in there and they'll help you out.
when my ipod's battery started doing this i took it to them and i bought a new battery ~20 to 30 and they replaced it on the spot, in minutes, at no charge.

I used to have an old mini, and actually changed the battery out myself with no issues- I just found one on ebay and stuck it in (pop off the top and bottom, slide the board out, change the battery, slide it back in and put the top and bottom back on). The only thing you had to watch for was to be careful about not breaking the hold switch. That was a mini however, if your classic is put together like my current classic then it could be trickier, I don't know....was actaully thinking of trying it soon since it only holds a charge for 45 min nowadays...if I do it I'll let you know!

Cheers,

Same here but I'm GASSING for a Ipod Touch. I hear a 4th generation Touch might be coming out later this year but they will probably be outrageously priced.

I changed the battery out on a friends before too. That's they way I'd go, unless you're out of space and need a bigger one. Then get a new and also change the battery out and have one you don't have to worry about.

Grab a battery and instructions and get to it...not that hard, you just need a plastic 'spudger' to pry open the case and a little (OK a *LOT*) of patience.

No, it'll be the same $199, $299, $399 price points that it is now. Otherwise it's encroaching on the iPad.

As for the OP:

Send it in, $56, and they do it for you.
