Hi everyone, I'm new here and value your opinions.

I retired from work 3 years ago and started picking up and playing the guitar again a little over 2 years ago. I practice everyday and can really hear how much better I have become over time. I'm not in a band but might want to join 1 sometime down the line when I feel I'm a better guitarist and have more confidence in myself.

My amp a Peavey Vypyr 75 was good for what I wanted at the time. It works for me when I play songs from Pantera, Metallica and other similar sounding bands but when I want to play Pink Floyd or Robin Trower songs I run into problems. With Pink Floyd's Time and Comfortably Numb I can easily dial in the acoustic settings on the amp but when it comes down to playing the solos I can get somewhat close to the sound I want but not close enough. Same goes for when I play Bridge of Sighs by Robin Trower I can get close but not quite their as the Vypyr just doesn't have the effects needed. I don't want to spend tons of money to get the sound I want as I'm not a pro, I'm looking for a cheaper way to achieve my goal.

I was thinking about picking up a Line 6 M13 to hook up to the amp. Am I able to do this with a solid state amp? Would it work? Help me out here what should I do? I know most of you will tell me sell the amp and get something else but I don't want to start over again and have to deal with finding the sounds I have already found using this amp. Any help will be appreciated.

What effects do you feel you're missing? You could certainly use the M13 with the Vypyr but you could end up expending more effort in re-programming.

Definitely I need Uni-Vibe and a distortion for Robin Trower. The Pink Floyd solos I'm not sure really what I need. I can get a good clean sound for the solo's using Comp but it's still way to mellow. I'm not sure if it's a soft fuzz or a distortion boost I need to get the sound I want. The fuzz on the vypyr is totally useless even when turned all the way down.

Pink Floyd, specifically David Gilmour, runs a clean amp (hiwatt) and uses pedals for crunch. check out http://www.gilmourish.com to see what he uses, they even have a buyers guide to get his tones.

Trower needs a vibe. I use a voodoo labs micro vibe and push my little fender with a screamer, though something like a Jetter Red pedal would be a good option too (or any of the Dumble-esque pedals).

I checked out the Gilmourish.com site and it looks like I would want a Big Muff pedal. Not sure if my solid state amp could handle this pedal. Also not sure if my amp would handle a Screamer pedal. Would I be able to achieve these sounds using the M13 if I set my amp on an acoustic setting? Again I'm a noob when it comes down to this stuff. Should I buy the pedals needed or go with the M13?

Welcome to the world of "tone chasing".....
it only gets worse.....but your going in the right direction. :D

Dont even ask me how many amps/pedals/guitars I been thru during the years.
My wallet screams when I just think about it.

Welcome to the club!

I know exactly what your saying! In a little over a year I've already bought 3 new guitars. The addiction has taken hold. I always wanted to be a good guitarist in my younger years and now since I have plenty of time to do whatever I want I'm going for it.

And I said it before....
coming to this forum and start finding out about all the cool stuff thats out there....
its like a Junkie Standing in a Crack house trying to ask for directions.

Lots and Lots of good folks here with tons of knowledge more then glad to help you out though seriously.

Welcome Stan!

Now do yourself a favor and run away. Run as fast and as far away from gear forums as is humaly possible!
You may not realize it yet, but you're Alice and this is the rabbit hole.

If you follow this advice, you'll be able to tell your grandchildren about the guy who saved you from yourself.
If not (which expect to be true), you'll look back on this moment as a turning point where you invest thousands upon thousands of dollars before ending up with a rig not unlike what you have now.

I pass this on as it was passed on to me. And foolishly ignored.

Man so true!!
I remember the day someone told me......"Hey....ever check out rig-talk?"
It was that moment my life changed!! Helluva ride though!! :D

I'm sorry but the addiction has already taken hold. I know it because I have had a fishing addiction for many years and I have spent thousands of dollars on that addiction. Now I have guitar and the sounds I want to get addiction and I'm already hooked.

Thanks for warning me but it's to late for me to save myself.

Heaven forbid I ever get into restoring a Muscle car.......
I would be broke and homeless ......

Oh well... I tried.

Here's a pic of the guy that introduced me to Rig-Talk. Of course at the time he was a corporate lawyer earning a 6 figure income with a wife & kids and lived in a million dollar house. That was two years ago!

Good luck my friend!

^^^ Well I hope I don't end up like that. ^^^  :scared:

I probably will spend lot's of money over the years to achieve the sounds I want but for now I'm trying to keep it somewhat cheap, I hope. :D

Please what route should I take, go for the pedals or the M13?

I'd go for pedals. I think you get better tones when the pedal is made for a task.

Pedals!

Atleast you're chasing a fairly cheap tone. Find an old $200 Musicman amp, a handfull of pedals and you're good to go.

Really amazing what can be done with a clean amp, fuzz pedal and delay.

As mentioned above, Gilmourish is a great site for gilmour info. They have plenty of info on budget gilmour rigs all the way upto the rig Gilmour used on each album, live for each tour, and approximate settings for each album and alot of songs.

been where you are and needed to get a variety of good tones for live and the studio. my advice is to get two things:

1) get a digitech rp1000. it has the effects/pedals you are looking for. i had the Gilmour and Trower tones all day long when i had the rp1000. why did i sell it? someone offered me $400 for my rp1000 so that he could have my presets (which i posted at the digitech forum). talk about GAS! i will be getting another rp1000 at some point soon...meanwhile, i use an Eleven rack preamp in much the same way. better tone, but much more expensive.

2) get a good amp with a nice dirty channel and an effects loop. even your average lunchbox sized amp/head could work for you. find the distortion sound you like and buy it. why get an amp when you have a modeling pedal? because no modeler sounds and feels like a mic'd cabinet....well maybe an axe-fx might, but i haven't tried one to comment on it.

finally, run away from this site like it's the gates of hell! no good thing (financially) can come from being here. GAS will get you.
