Warnings/Bans/Consistency

I've seen this on other sites and I think it should be added here. Seems the mods are trying to make this a better place and idk, maybe forums are just dead now but on this forum in particular people can do whatever they want and it's ok.

Personal attacks, slander, sabotaging classified threads, racism, etc etc. There's a lot of childish people here who have drove hundreds of members away when they should probably have been the ones to go.

Give a warning maybe the first time with posting restrictions and then gone.

Also there is no consistency on rig talk. Some people can say horrible things, make threats or whatever and nothing happens but then on the other hand someone who has been here since the beginning can say "Gay" in a joking manner and be removed without warning.

Not sure why im even posting this, I've certainly grown tired of this place but I feel if there's any hope then something like this should be taken into consideration.

I'm on a couple of other forums that are still way more active and you don't see any of the BS there. Im just guessing here but it's probably because that stuff isn't tolerated. Anyway. Just my .02

you'll find it was the same 5 - 10 people doing that. They never ever post in anything actually guitar related so now it seems like the forum is died .. but the fact is it was the off topic that was making it seem like this was a active forum

To elaborate on what I think Donnie is getting at, at least in-part:

The argy-bargy that developed between a handful of members was seen by them as fun-and-entertaining. They were cool with each other as demonstrated many times when they actually got serious. To the casual observer 'though, especially one who didn't possess the foreknowledge of the situation, it would've seemed like OTT name calling and whatnot.

I firmly believe that many would've misconstrued this to-and-fro as vindictive, but in reality it was just a bit o' fun. Even some of the names they came up with for each other were pretty-funny.

Still, these days there's a much-greater focus on optics when it comes to public figures, institutions and businesses, which is why some members and whatnot left or ceased posting.

Some of the strange bannings were simply because someone complained. Other times somebody will make a banworthy threat or whatever but if nobody complains the mods likely never see it...so it slides.

Indeed SW. Ironic that it follows therefore that if one wants the site to retain members, one shouldn't report unless something serious has occurred.

Hence:

Trigger-happy Reporting to the Mods

Obviously the examples I gave were extreme cases, but 4 such complaints were received in one day.

Another thing to consider is that it's ultimately better to help someone modify his behaviour than to trigger-ban him, only to have to deal with a future alias of his. This is not only the compassionate way to deal with such matters, if at all possible, but the alternative is to whack every offender with the Ban Hammer™, which would result in folks treading on eggshells and that's not the happy, relaxed environment any of us wants.

Agree on no trigger reporting. I've never reported anything other than a rare alert about a wall of Sunday morning spam-bot shoe threads.

But I'm not talking about trigger banning...I'm talking about obvious, over-the-top "how is this person not banned just based on their continuous horrid behavior" banning...which for some reason doesn't happen.

Don't be callin' nobody grapes, sonny.

That's "grapist".

Yeah, I get ya SW.

There's always been some room for nuance AFAIK. Peeps aren't machines and neither are the mods. I know Dan, Steve and Tyler try to cut folks some slack and I'll likely roll that way too. I mean, when it comes down to it, unless someone's continually disobeyed a personal directive from a mod, he's unlikely to be perma-banned purely for "bad behaviour". The latter is a part of adult life and it's one big grey area in that what's acceptable for one man (or woman) may not be for another.

There'd have to be threats, repeated porn posting, overt, venomous or vindictive racism or something like that involved I'd have thought. You need some meat on the bone before you're morally justified in taking a bite, methinks. Personally I wouldn't ban someone for "bad behaviour"; there'd have to be more to it than that I reckon.

Just my thoughts, man. As I suggested, the mods aren't machines and like all teams, our characters and quite where we'd each draw the line will vary and that's not even considering the variation in the raw material (potential banees), each of whom's transgressions will differ.

Bottom line: "Bad behaviour" is fraught with interpretive nuance to deal with, both individually for a mod and on the member end too... IMHO. Sorry if this isn't the response you might've been hoping for brother, but it's all I've got.

You strike down that hammer with great vengeance and furious anger, MM, those that try to poison and destroy our rig-talk brothers. The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men

But there is and has been.

Look at Reza for example. Was ran off by the mob mentality. Super nice guy with TONS of gear, actual demos and contributed more than half of the people here (and that's being generous)

Who gives a shit if you dont like his tone? Or his heritage? Grow up.

Just the other day I had someone comically bringing my personal life onto the forums as an attempt to insult me because he was wrong about me accusing me if being someone else.

Its the internet, people are going to disagree but theres some toxic shit on this forum and idk, my thread was just an idea. Its your forum do what you want, it's already too late for a large majority of people who left but obviously new people still sign up and idk about you but I like gear forums when there's more people/more content.

To piggy back off my people are going to disagree comment. Yesterday for example in the newcomer thread.

I had a disagreement with Donnie. A toxic person would have escalated it to no end (which is still happening in my classified thread btw, has been reported and still nothing has been done about it)

But Donnie came back with a Telecaster joke and it was all good.

My point is some people take shit way too far and I think something should be done about it. I could be wrong but in MY opinion if you don't do anything about it nobody new will stay, more long timers will leave and this place will continue to be the same 20 people until the new owner decides his investment didn't pan out and shuts off the lights.

I see your point and I get it.

The reality is that we don’t have as many active mods to enforce the severe stuff and it wasn’t drama to enforce the rules - you knew when someone crossed a line and they’d get dealt with. The activity doesn’t support that kind of moderation anymore and the majority of the gig experienced and knowledgeable have moved on. There’s a few here that share live videos of them playing but it seems more like advertisement revenue for their band material on social media where they don’t contribute anything else.

The forum needs a balance and honestly it’s lacked it for a long time. I just don’t like sharing material on here as it never sparks discussion, but I don’t relate playing wise to anyone on other forums as much and this place overall is Home room to a lot of friends ive met in person.

I’ll be honest though it’s nowhere as bad as the HCAF exodus days. The amount of bantering and off topic slandering of others was worse then than anything current. They complained they didn’t have their cop waiving a stick emoji more than anything else.

Hey, the world is pretty messed up right now. This place should be an easy relief valve.
Lot's of undercurrent of anger with everybody with everything going on here and abroad.
If there were never any punches thrown now and then I'd be worried!
I'll go toe to toe on anything but draw the line with really personal low blows.

I can take an earned slap off side the head (thanks Dave) from folks here I may not agree
with on a lot of stuff, but their words are worth reading. The whole live and learn thing.

There's a few here that just proved to be really deep down ugly people - the at first
typical political brass knuckle shots were very quickly replaced with flat out bile of the
worst kind, and obviously intended to be as personally hurtful as possible.

Racism, homophobia, misogyny, and flat out ugly all hiding behind any random political
story of the day. Fuck them. That's what ignore is for. I sure as hell wouldn't watch a
TV show with characters like that, why read their dogshit here?

Otherwise it's like Cheers. Hang out, have some laughs, give some shots and get them
right back, usually with both sides chuckling.

TLDR - NSFW
