Guys,
Thinking about picking one of these up, there are a few used out there. Quite a few variations and versions of this guitar, does anybody have any recommendations as to which one has the magic, or which to avoid? I'm talking about the USA versions, not the MIJ.
Thanks.

Any of the following are great: N4 Authentic, N4 Vintage, N4 CV, or of course a 1991 N4 Davies.

My first choice of course would be a Davies (though you won't find one) followed by an Authentic. Some believe that the Davies is just hype and that the modern N4's play and sound just as good but I have played 3 Davies in my life and all felt and sounded a step above. I've heard that the CV isn't as beefy sounding as the others. I've found my SS fret guitars to be a little brighter and snappier. I can imagine this would be magnified with a carbon fret board.

I have played a few from the mid 90's when Grover Jackson ran the Washburn Custom shop. They were good but just didn't seem to play as well as the Davies.

So, if I couldn't find a Davies I would go with the Authentic since its a replica of the Davies.

Thanks man. What about this one. It's an N4 limited, mahogany body and neck.
Talked to the guy at Northwest and he may let he go for 2k, it's signed by Nuno which has given it a slight price bump.

I was seriously considering an N4 CV but was baffled by why a killer spec'd guitar with a 3k price tag has a Floyd Rose Special instead of an original....

I don't know the neck specs on that one. I'm assuming it's the same as the Vintage, if so I would still go for the Authentic. Also not sure how mahogany would work with the pickup configuration and the ebony fretboard. I would definitly want to play it first.

The originals were Alder, Maple, Ebony. I have a Davies that kills!!! Look at the used market and grab an older Alder guitar. These are so cheap on the used market I'd never pay $2k for one made with different woods. I scored my davies for $850, put a little over $200 and several hours labor replacing all the electronics and cleaning it up. It's a fantastic guitar!!! Mine sat in a damp basement for over 20 years thats why it needed the work...

The problem (and reality) is it is EXTREMELY unlikely the OP will be able to find a Davies. All "older" used Alder N4's (non-Davies) are not equal. Most that I have played did not play as well. I would pay the extra money for an Authentic rather than buy a used '97 for example. A used Authentic would be the way to go IMO.

my buddy got one, a white one from that music store that is washburn central, cant think of the name, but it is easily one of the best guitars I have ever played, it was alder, ebony fretboard and the stock pickups were great. the guitar sounded fantastic, played effortlessly, and the build quality was as good as anything. I have seen other n4s that were crap though. I guess that doesn't help much.

At one time they were selling them as Made in USA but they were being built overseas. Not sure what years those were.
