Weird Runt 50 issue....

Figured I'd post here vs. the Friedman section, since there's more traffic here...

So, yesterday, my Runt 50 started having volume swells... I've ruled out tubes.. Went through the preamp tubes one by one, and no dice.. I put new power tubes in it, (same rating as whats in it, so I didn't need to bias), still no change.

It almost acts as if its the standby switch. It acts the same as if I put it on standby, (but not switching). Is it possible that the standby switch would malfunction?? Next step is to try some contact cleaner on it?

Check all jacks and clean them…including any effects loop.

While tubes might be good, wiggle them while the amp is on to see if they are getting complete contact.

Yeah, it'll get a good douching tonight. I should have some Tungsol EL34B's in the mailbox I want to try. I'll go over all the jacks, tube sockets, everything..

Its the 2nd red wire plugged into the standby switch. I wiggle it with some plastic pliers, and its the culprit. Seems any easy fix, but I don't want to be yanking that plug out and start fingering it.. Not sure it's a good idea... its basically stuck in standby unless I wiggle it, but I think the wire going to the clip is broke off under the shrink tube....

No, it was like that when I opened it up. Somebody either messed with it, or it wasn't attached to the connector right.

Somebody was obviously tugging on that. The shrink wrap is all loose. It even looks like the wrong shrink wrap

Man, unless you discharge the caps I would not go touching those wires anymore.
You get bonus points for using plastic pliers though.


So, I enlarged the picture. Looks like you have a rodent problem.

Its fixed. I wired on a new insulated connector, clipped it on, and good to go! Everything's clean, tube sockets snugged up, and have a pair of Tungsol EL34B's settling in. ?

Yeah, the Tungsols are pretty beefy! I like them better than the EH 6CA7's!
