Hey fellas. Posted this same topic at HCAF. Just looking for input. I have a Mesa 2x12 that I want to use with my Baron k88. The Black Shadow speakers are ok with the Baron but the Baron was designed around a v30 style speaker per Dave at Baron Amps. Dave suggested v30 or the WGS vet30s/WGS retro 30s. I have found a lot of clips but I have never tested any of theses speakers with the Baron k88.

I want some lead sizzle but need bottom end for modern rock cover band a la Tool, Disturbed, Nickelback etc etc etc.

What gets me there the best ?

That video has kept me pasted to youtube for the last 48 hours. Great tune and great playing bro !
Liked your TS/OCD shoot outs also.

If you want more sizzle and low end then the Retro 30 is what you want.

Yea - the Retros bring back some of the high end the Veterans remove. Also they have even less of the upper mid spike of the Vintage 30s that the Veterans take out. Also the Retros are tighter than the other two.

I haven't tried the Retro 30, but I have a 4x12 loaded with V30's and Vet30's in an x pattern. The Vet 30's are softer in their attack than the Celestions. I did have a quad of Vet 30's in that cab, but I missed the cut and sizzle of the V30's so I compromised. I really dig the combo.

I put a quad of Retro 30's in a 412 cab and have not plugged in my Mesa 212 with Vin30's since. That was 6 months ago. Love the chewy tone from the Retro's. I hit them with a 5153 or a Mesa Roadster. I'm sold on the Retro 30's. Far less harsh than the Vin 30's. Have not tried other WGS speakers, but want to. Love the Retro 30's.

if you get a chance to try the reaper 30's out.. WGS best speaker they make.. i have 2 of those and 2 et65's in x pattern and they sound amazing.. ive heard the retro 30's sound better than vet 30s.. WGS makes great speakers.. and for the money you cant beat it.. i actual like my 5150 cab with reaper and et65 better than my buddies mesa oversized with v30's.. for some reason i dont like v30s they are to high sounding.. i like lots of lows and mids... hope this helps

I have a pair of Retro 30's in my Randall 2x12. I took out the original V30's because they didn't have the clarity in the mids or lows that I wanted. The Retro 30's still have that aggressive modern character to them like the V30, only they are tighter, clearer and better balanced.

Actually, now that I think of it, I recently put a Vet30 in with one of the Retro 30's in my 2x12. Just to try out. It sounds good. Good enough to not pull out I guess. But I've had the Retro 30" for almost three years now and love them.
When I find a nice empty 4x12 I'm loading it with the two stock V30's from the Randall 2x12 and two Vet30's. If it's a slant, Vet30's on top. If it's a straight Vet30's on the bottom.

Cool. I am having my Retro 30s installed and should have the cab back this week. A lot of forumites said buy Celestions. Your post makes me encouraged about my decsion.

I recently picked up a pair of WGS Invader 50w. They are middle ground between a v30 and a Greenback to my ears. Really have a Celestion type grind to them. Highly recommend.

If your Black Shadows are 16ohm (I can't remember which they typically are), I'd probably take them off your hands. ;)
