So, yesterday, I bought Gibson Explorer number (5), and got to thinking about the amps I've bought and sold numerous times...

Marshall JCM2000 DSL50 (5)
Peavey JSX (5)
Laney GH50L (4), and a GH100L
Marshall JVM205H (4)
Randall RD45H (4)
EVH 5150 III 50 watt (3)

Numerous amps twice.

Matchless C30 (3)
Naylor SD60 (3)
Bogner 100B (3)
Mesa Recto (3)

Guess 3rd times a charm with me.

I'm on my 4th or 5th Mesa Mark V:25. Second QuickRod. I've owned a few JCA 22. The EVH 5153 2 times. Looking at picking up a Mark IV and/or a Triple Crown and I have had both of those before, so yea I'm guilty.

LOL, you guys crack me up. I thought I was pretty bad but at least I switched mine up when I got G.A.S.

I will say this. I have bought and sold Fender Stratocasters so much, I can barely even remember them. Finally about a year ago, I got an Eric Clapton Strat and finally felt like I found one I won't hate in a month. LOL

As far as amps go, my personality was the type back in the day where I had to try everything and kept chasing different things, tones, etc. I was never satisfied.

I've luckily never had to do that. I'm always sure when i sell an amp.

Had the diezel VH4 3 times. Herbert 2 times.
PRS archon 3 times.  engl fireball 100 2 times.

Still have the Archon and Herbert.

Late 70’s Marshall 2204. Great amp, but hard to find a great unmolested version.

I'm >this< close to pulling the trigger on a second EVH LBX II, LOL.

I always sell my EVH Stealth 6l6 heads, then a month later I regret it and buy another. I’m trying to hold out this time but getting close to saying the hell with it and buying another. It’s just the ultimate amp for me.

So many amps over the years..I can't remember all of them .. :aww:

But if I had to pick one..Marshall JMP 2204...probably 15-20 times

I did this with rectifiers especially until I realized there are many things that make the amp sound different. You can change any of these until you get a sound you like:

1) change pre amp tubes, especially v1
2). change power tubes to a different model. eg ruby to sovtek.
3) take the preamp tube covers off. IMO those things kill tone
4)take the back cover of the amp off. see above
5) change string brand and gauge. eg, switching from daddario to ernie ball might make you love the amp
6) change picks. endless options here. they all have their own tone.
7) change cabs. ( maybe not too practical)
8) change speaker cable and guitar cable. different gauges make a big difference
9) change pickups. some pickups just suck with your amp.
10) change the wire that connects the pots and jacks inside your guitar. big sound difference between say 22awg and 26awg wire. the thinner the better for me.
11) adjust the neck of the guitar as well as the action.
12) adjust the pickup height
13). boost the amp
14). clean the pots, jacks and tube sockets with deoxit in both the amp head and the guitar
15) glue in the frets of the guitar for better vibration transfer
16). tighten all screws in the guitar
17). if you can only play at low volume get an attenuator. any cheap one will do. just to get to the point where the power tubes work a bit.
18) put a little fabric softener in the speaker cone to help break in the speakers. very little. very, very little. a drop really.
19) when you change strings, run the old string back and forth a few times though the nut and bridge slots to make sure there is no pinching of the strings.

the list is endless really. but I am willing to bet that you can get a great sound out of most amps by doing any of these things. obviously if you like the sound of your amp ignore this list.

Mark V:25. Twice now. Won't do it again.

Not an amp, per se, but I'm on my third Kemper.

^ This, with one exception:
I had a Bogner XTC 101b.
Sold the 101b to a friend and bought a 20th XTC.
Wasn't sure it was better, so I traded the 20th for a Les Paul Custom, and bought the 101b back from my buddy ( He loved it, but was looking to downsize his gear collection - lucky for me :D )
Now I'm in the process of trading that 101b again, this time to the guy who has my old 20th XTC, because he's not sure he likes the 20th better than a 101b, and I'm not sure I like the 101b better than the 20th!

Sounds like you need to own both at the same time:)

I think the only amps I've bought more than once are Marshall Superleads and Marshall 2203/2204, and probably 2x as many Superleads as 2203/2204. I've lost count tho, at the beginning of this year I didn't have any but I've since bought a '76 Superlead and an '81 2204.

omg so many...

Boogie c+ of various versions (at least 6)
Boogie mark III (at least 2 of every stripe. 2 reds, 3 greens, 4 blues, 2 purples, 2 or 3 black dot/no dot's, 3 of these were coliseums)
mark IIB coliseum (2)
Boogie mark IV (8-10 of various formats)
boogie simul satilite (3)
Tremoverb (3 or 4)
5150 (3 combos, 3 heads)
kemper profiler (2)
jazz chorus (4)
marshall 8100 (3)
marshall jcm 800 2205-2210 (3 2205's 1 2210)
fender champ (5)
fender deluxe reverb (2 reissues, 1 66 blackface)

thats all i can think of off the top of my head. my gear pic folder can confirm.

ya know, you can have em all, just not all at once. i gear flipped for a long time as a hobby/obsession, so i didn't have much of this stuff for long periods of time.

Soldano Avenger. I went to the Slo,for awhile, tried the Diezel Vh2, EVH 5153, and a badass modded marshall. But the Avenger is the smoothest high gain amp I have tried. Very musical and silent.

Diezel Herbert 4 times though were different version (mk1, 2 x mk2 and mk3)
Fryette D60/D120 probably 6 times
Engl Fireball 3 times 60/100
Axe FX variants 4 times
Cameron CCV 2 times
EVH 5150 III 4 times 50/100
Fryette UL 2 times
Mesa Triple Rectifier 3 times
Mesa Mark V 2 times
Bogner Uberschall 3 times
Diezel VH4 2 times

Currently own 2 Wizard MTLs with a 3rd in the mail

Guess 3rd times a charm with me.

I sold my Matchless DC-30 over 10 years ago. I have been considering getting another one, but I have a feeling it just wouldn't come close to the magic of my old one.
