I'm particularly fond of the Ibanez TS 5 Tubescreamer Soundtank. You can find them used cheap - I like it better than the TS9.

Oh, I thought your post said to boost Marshall's :D

Creation Audio Labs mk 4.23 for super transparent boost into my Marshall Vintage Modern 2466.
Xotic EP Booster if I wanna add a little fatness to my P90- equipped guits.

is that a fad right now? i keep seeing people using the mk4.23. it's a great boost for sure, it just sprang out of nowhere to me.

What I'm curious about is where do the majority of Marshall owners place their boost pedals...up front, or in the loop (specifically for lead tone gassing)? Thanks.

I use a Maxon OD-808 to boost my Marshall 2553. The Ibanez TS-5 is a good suggestion on the cheap.

How are you liking the Marshall Class 5? I have considered getting one in the past.

Always in the front.

There are so many great choices for boosting a Marshall. It depends what the amp sounds like to begin with and what sort of sound you are going for.

Depending on what sound I am going for, I like boosting with:

Boss SD-1
Ibanez or Maxon Tube Screamer
MXR Distortion + (No kidding, a classic and used the right way gets some great sounds)
MXR 6 Band
MXR BadAss Overdrive ( A new, boutiquey type of Overdrive from MXR really impressed me)
Fulltone OCD
Boss GE-10
DOD OD250 or Yngwie (Great with strats with single coils)

its pretty much exactly what i wanted. my "project" is like a rockin power trio Zep meets soundgarden type of thing and id like to record the guitars myself if possible and this is just what i wanted. thing is i like the crunch right at about 2 oclock and the lead tone full blast but the low end gets a tad flubby full bore so im thinking a boost and maybe a tube change is what i need. heres a real quick clip i just recorded, volumes all the way up

and thanks for all the input guys ill look into them

As I posted....in another thread, yesterday I tested the super ZVEX super hard on, Keller Pull, so I bring them in context

Amp my nonmodded 1976 precascaded Marshall JMP

I tried
Suhr Kokoboost:t (very clean, best neutral! cleanish boost, the mid adjust is cool, but not quite in the range I like, "lacks" the stability, definition ((ok as it is not intended)) of a tubescreamer clone)
MXR CAE 402 (ok, but not as good as the Kokoboost, degrades the sound more, overdrive pedal side is too brittle/grittle, less gain than the koko)
MXR Micro Amp: nothing to write about, more aggressive than its bigger brother, but not as clear)
Analogman King of Tone 4: (quite open (for a tubescreamer, my choice if I had no rodenberg, more neutral playing feel, little more tubescreamer gene, stays quite clear even with much gain, quite interesting/solid/a lot of definition, if you will use a strat neck pu, very! transparent and the most dynamic tubescreamer voiced pedal)
Xotic RC Boost: (more harsh and little sounding than the Analogman KOT, but ok, bass gets too muddy when added, with more gain a little muddy, quite neutral)
Maxon SD9: (to much mid hump, little dynamics, but ok, dominates the amp, muddy)
Okko Twin Sonic: (quite a lot headroom, not bad, but gets muddy with higher gain settings, a little brittle like the RC Boost, not much gain, a quite neutral sounding unit)
Boss DS1 Japanese: (very! little ((the least)) midrange, quite spongy feel, gets too muddy, little dynamics
Blackstar HT Boost: (boring, nothing special, the tube does nothing)
Zvex Super Hard On: Quite open and very aggressive (too much highs for my taste, as the 76 JMP marshall has a lot of bite), makes the bass strings more solid, but not as nice as the rodenberg, lacks a bit depth, could be quite cool for a modern sounding lame amp giving it a more bity vintage vibe)
Keeler Pull: very unique pedal, but not usable in front of my marshall, it acts like an enhancer/exciter, like a vox when it starts to breaks up, i.e. it compresses and adds harmonic structure, cool for fenders, voxes and tweeds with little gain.
Cornell TM Boost: Unbelievable, it acts like a preamp pedal, you have to try it like the rodenberg.....never heard a "Treble Booster like this, very!!! big open, non harsh (know beano boost and Divided by 13 Treble booster), instant Plexi Hendrix vibe with my Marshall with strat and vintage SC, it adds depth and mojo, a bit tightness for the bass strings, when used in a vintage context, i.e gain in the vein of black crowes or Hendrix, it does not!!! resemble a fuzz face....a must, not! appropriate with more gain
The Rodenberg 728NG: (probably not much known in the US is a booster with overdrive which I prefer to the Kokoboost which adds certain frequencies I really like, it enhances/excites the sound, but does not color the amp in a non transparent way (probably like the Keeler pull or klon (booster side 707), I do only know sound file comparisons of the klon/keeler)
The Rodenbergs overdrive side 808/909 is a little more tubescreamer (as it compresses a little) which I prefer to the KOT(which is a little more boxy than the Rodenberg), as it is a little more open and not as neutral playing wise, you can adjust bass cut or not, the pedal is highly con-figural, try it, exceptional pedal for enhancing your amp, quite a lot gain is available (like Vais Eat em and Smile Solo Sound).
Will try the OCD and 101 Lehan Lab Dynamic D next week

I do not like normal tubescreamers, as they are too boxy (loss of bass, honky, non-dynamic) in front of (this) marshall...

right now, my ranking for the JMP Marshall with a Rosewood Strat with vintage sc and alnico humbucker on the bridge:

1. Rodenberg 728NG (a lot of gain (808, 909 side), little (no) sound degradation, natural and improved tone, boost side enhances the marshalls tone in a perfect way, less neutral than the coco) my tip, cool switching
1. Cornell TM Boost (the choice for for vintage tones with gain like Hendrix Black Crowes, cool coloration) you need it also!
2. Analogman KOT 4 (boxier than the Rodenberg, a little more focused a bit clearer, more sterile than the above mentioned pedals, much more headroom and less brittle than the Xotic RC)
3. Zvex Super Hard on (more open than the KOT, but less flexible, not as clear, a bit harsh for a bity marshall, no tone control, less depth than the Cornell Boost and Rodenberg)
4. Suhr Kokoboost neutral, imho a bit boring, no additional tightness/stability on the bass strings)

Greetings
Kai

With my 1987 reissue I've been using a Keeley Katana coupled
with either a dyna comp or a pigtronix philosopher's tone.

On it's own the katana is relatively transparent and does
a good job of just goosing the front end of the marshall without
too much tonal coloration.

After hearing your clip, I would probably go with a Fulltone 69SR, or maybe a Treble booster of some sort,,maybe just a simple Xotic AC Booster. Your Tonebender thought is probably a good one, lots to choose from.
