I am looking into this. I have 81's and Lawrence's. They have a voice suited for metal AND are higher to highest output. Is there any pickups that are a pup suited for metal, but moderate+ output.

If I had a gun held to my head and had to pee an answer it would be a JB, but again that is a guess to keep my head from being blown off.

duncan distortion for a more messy type of JB tone - the ceramic magnet of a DD will be a hotter JB.

paf pro in the bridge.

wolfgang pickups - over-wound paf tone

JB - alnico V magnets - warmer smoother DD with a little less bite

dimarzio x2n - my current favorite. not very well known around here, but its what ill be getting soon. hottest of the bunch i have mentioned thus far, but EQ'ed differently for a metal tone. i wouldnt call it classic rock/weak category like the output of a JB or paf pro.

Clips of some of the pickups being discussed here.

I've found that the JB has a much higher peak volume than the Distortion, about 6dB higher, so that may mean it is actually higher output. Although I think the RMS volume on the Distortion may or may not be higher, haven't metered it yet. There are a lot of variables that go into a pickup being higher output than another. There's something about the Jailbait model that just rubs me the wrong way... The distortion sounds and feels like a very powerful pickup, not for the light hearted. If you are after a metal pickup that doesn't 'sound' like a typically metal pickup would sound, like an 81 does, then I'd suggest the Duncan Custom. Very organic and balanced. Doesn't strike me as too hot or over the top.

WCR ice-bucker, which is based on a godwood but tighter and punchier.

I would recommend BareKnuckle pickups..... Nailbomb, Rebel Yell , Holy Diver, Crawler...would all be good

I concur with the4thlast1, the BKP Rebel Yell is particularly great for metal - lean low end that stays very tight, snarly upper-mid voicing coupled with the smooth top end you expect from an Alnico magnet. With the scatterwinding, coil offset and ~14.5kΩ DC it's extremely clear and open. I use them in both 6 and 7-string formats in my metal guitars.

I have a Rebel Yell in one of my 7's and have tried it in several guitars. Its a great pickup, such as all the other BK's... Its a matter of mating them with the right guitar. In some guitars the Rebel Yell can be a bit bright, maybe a little thin on the highs. In a dark or fat sounding guitar it is really awesome. I would say Nailbombs are a little more balanced but might be a little raw sounding compared to the Rebel. Anyway theres lots of good choices from the BK lineup. They might cost more than Dimarzios or Duncans, mostly becuase the US dollar is in the shit house but I think they are on another level.

A plain old PAF. With a high gain amp your pickup really doesn't need a whole lot of output to get the job done. The lower output also helps you gain better articulation.

The only drawback to PAFs is they tend to be brighter than the more mid heavy overwound pickups, but it's nothing that backing your guitar's treble knob down to 7 or 8 can't cure.

I put a Rebel Yell on a Slash Signature Goldtop and the pups are BRIGHT. They crunch really nicely I like the pickups, but the 500K pots and that guitar is a little too much. So yeah they would work well with a dark sounding guitar. i still prefer them over the Seymour Alnico Pro that came with the guitar.

Duncan - JB, Custom, Distortion
DiMarzio - PAF Pro, AT1, Breed, Steve's Special

Most BKP's aren't that high output when you stack them aside next to a duncan for example, they just sound very "clean". It's their voicing that makes them sound huge, but they remain open, clear and rich sounding when pushed under gain because they aren't overly hot.

Well if you are asking which I recommended, it would be the standard Duncan Custom, with Ceramic mag.

What's the guit?

The Duncan custom is a great sounding pup. Moderate output but not super high. Has a great crunch to it and drives an amp well.

How can anybody say X2N when the OP asked "What are some metal pickups that are not super output??"...is there a higher output passive made??? :loco:

Anderson H2+ is my absolute favorite. The Screamin' Demon works well in certain guitars, not so much in others. The Duncan '78 is a great choice, as is the Custom 5.

Think a Duncan Invader would suit him well!

Here is a clippy of my own Duncan Custom. Not by best recorded tone ever, but good enough for a lead I think.
