Used to use in a FOH rack. Great crunchy snare reverb. Not used on guitar though. I imagine it would work well though, for that 16 big sound.

Everyone overused those in the 80s and yes, for guitar. Some folks still use them...

As stated a big 80s rack delay still used today, very good unit.

Big Hair Snare Verb. Its been out for so long, its bound to make a retro comeback.

Sweet, keen to get my hands on one.

My Bassist (and engineer) said he wants to find one for our new cd we gonna record. He said would be good for me.

Gonna go look for one !

Also look for a Roland SDE 1000 which should be in the same price range used, great delay used by Vai, EVH, and countless others. Great delay.

Thanks !

Will do.

Only problem is i wont find these units where i am, might look at getting it brought over from there

Wasn't it the SDE3000 that was typically associated with guys like EVH, Vai, etc? But, you are correct that the processing is essentially the same in those early SDE units.

The SPX90 is great for that Landau effected tone. DeMartini also used it for his pitch shift around the time of the Detonator album.

+1 to all of this

i considered an SPX90 at one time but it seemed they were a bit touchy as to what amplifiers or settings someone might be running. for a recording studio effort i bet that would slay on guitar delay's or as snare reverbs as mentioned before. but for straight guitar i much prefer the timeline effects for a simillar taste.

yep and I own an SDE-3000.

Same basic unit though, cannot go wrong with the 1000 or midi 2500.

I've heard that the chorus/pitch detune effect sounds like this:

I had one in my rack back then, it was a pretty good unit for a lot of things, but went south on me after 3 years of gigging :aww:
I sent it in to be repaired, but they did not totally fix the problems so I retired it. We had 3 of them in our FOH rack, they worked without issue through 7 years of constant use
I replaced it with an REV7 (actually 2) which I still use to this day. I love those things!
One stays on a "live referance" patch at about 30%, the other is used for whatever fits what were doing. They are a bit noisy, but I have really grown to love them over the years.

1st rack piece I ever owned. I think that one has a 400mS MAX delay time (It's been a long time). You can run double delay times simultaneously, panned to either/both sides. It has a +4dB/-10dB switch for the inputs and outputs, and it is very user friendly. Best run in a loop, or a W/D situation.(In front of an amp is just meh....) Nice chorus, Detune, Reverb and Delays. There's a patch called Symphonic on there that I love and used to use w/ clean tones back in the day.

Eventually I upgraded and got the SPX90II (Same sounds, just longer delay times 500mS-- I think...)

I really had fun with that piece of gear, BUT-- Unless there are specific tones you're trying to get from it-- For around the same money, I'd suggest you get a used Rocktron Intellifex. More versatile, longer delay times, and it's quieter.

Mike Stern uses one for his "chorus" sound, though it's really the detune in stereo I think. He doesn't like true chorus, apparently.

was the standard for along time.

^^ This, If you are a Landau fan he got some of his signature tones from this unit. This and the Rev 7 were very coveted items in the 80s as well as the H3000's by Eventide. Those were the items in most racks, oh and the PQ3 of course

i used and abused the spx90 and then the 990 for a long time.

good cheapish peace of FOH or small studio gear. road worthy as hell.

if you can get it cheap, go for it.

Thanks for everyone's input !!!

The SPX90 is $125 USD

and there's a Rocktron Intellifex on ebay also for the same price.

https://cgi.ebay.com/Rocktron-Intellifex ... 20ba776ee2

No reason to get the SPX90 - just wanna try something new, havent had any "new" gear in AAAAGGGESS

at the moment im rocking a G-Sharp for delay/reverb on solo's - sounds great for me.

But keen to try something else

what do people think ?

The SPX90 or the Rocktron Intellifex ??
