What chord is this?

I believe it's just two notes and their octaves. Notes appear to be a fifth apart.

I don't have a guitar with me, but it looks like a couple of good ol' powerchords with an added 9th. I think? Maybe? Probably not much help, sorry.

Yup, it's stacked 5th. so in a standard tuned guitar in A it'd be...
e----
b----
g----
d---9
a---7
e---5

Normally you'd view it as a sus9 or add9

Devon Townsend uses the shit out of that form, the 9th really makes that chord pop in the right context.

Really? That's it? I thought he was using all 4 fingers? Guess not though.

Yeah is that is root, 5th , 9th.

You can see it pretty easy and you can experiment with drone strings and barring either the index or pinky for added girth and dimension.

LoL, the "progressive power chord" according to one of Petrucci's vid's I remember watching along time ago.

It's a good way for a bit more tension but without it turning into spazz with gain...halfway through I use that voicing a bunch...

Yeah man, that is what I am talking about. Not too much tension to create mud but just enough to rework a plain riff and give it some hip factor.

Man I love add9 5th chords... I use them a lot as they're great to change up from power and regular 5th chords. Though I really don't like power chords really. I can't make a good riff from just power chords ever, at least not to my ears.

I've been into Add 9 Arpeggio's or a while now ..if you play them over the right harmonzied chord, they have a "dreamy" sorta sound ...minor or major..mixing them up with 7th's are nice too.

my musical vocabulary is not that deep so i'll say a octave. around "e"
