What do you Marshall guys think of this head?

Have my eye on this 1987. Seems it has a bit of history with PRS and Al Di Meola. Was 1980 a good year for these amps? How fair is this price? It's a long shot, but I'm considering trading some stuff to the shop and picking this up.

Also, do you guys think it would be a bad idea to mod an amp like this, considering it was owned/used by Al/PRS? I still haven't heard the stock sound from this, but I imagine it would rip with a good attenuator. I've been gassing for a Marsha forever, but I don't see that happening any time soon. May have to buy used and mod later. Opinions?

That's too clean to mod IMHO... good mod candidates are beat to hell amps, amps with mods already or kit amps. Personally I would never take a 'real' Marshall and have it modded.

Having said that, once something is your property, do what you want with it!

I don't understand why anyone mods these types of amps. If they're not what you're after, don't buy it. If you want more gain add a nice, high end boost pedal.

Don't buy it.

Firstly because of it's history/value, if you intend to mod it, you shouldn't buy this amp IMO.
secondly, it's in great condition, it's value is going to increase, you risk that by modding it
thirdly, like Stratazone stated, you're better off buying a beat up Marshall clone and modding it, or.. save up and by a Marsha.
Let a collecter buy it. :)

Just my $0.02

There are 1000,0000000000,000000000 companies that make modded marshall style amps.
Every one of them thinks they have ground breaking tone.
To me there is no reason to mod a Marshall unless it's an extra piece of crap amp you can spare.
There are many companies that will build you anything you want.
I have never seen a Marshall you can't get to sing and get uber gain out of with a simple OD pedal.
If you want a Marshall that has more mods than you can imagine, get a used JVM for less than that asking price.
Buy that amp if you want it for it's lineage.

These are collectible? Really?

If it's really a big deal, remove the stock pcb and toss it in a drawer. Just don't put chicken heads on it, you might get sued for trademark infringment.

It seems as if the scarf guy has made a new account under the name Fireball :hys: Just noticed this the other day. I think that pic made it where he had to create a new identity

If you buy it, its yours plain and simple do whatever you want with it!

If you want to have an amp modded, I'd try to get something cheaper but sounds like a cool amp none the less

I would probably not mod it (I cant believe I'm saying that) thats a piece of history. The price is high naturally belonging to him. You could find a prime mod candidate for much less. Having said that, that is one prime mod candidate.
Had it not belonged to Al, I would have that thing shipped directly to Mike Fortin
I would probably do it anyway after 3 weeks

You can find one for a better price than they are offering. Keep looking around and you'll find one cheaper.

I wouldn't pay more than $1000 for it and hell yes, mod the amp.

Steve

That's been on their website for awhile. Not sayin' it ain't true but they did sell me my '02 PRS CU 22 and claimed it was a '92. I didn't care too much cause I love the guitar and I'm a player and not a collector but you'd think a PRS dealer could get the year right on a PRS guitar.

Those are not collectible. I personally wouldn't buy a Marshall without playing through it first unless it was before a 1973. I've never played a '72 or earlier that was a dud. Buy it if it sounds good and is the right price, not for any other reason. I agree with others who have said any Marshall will rip with a good pedal. I also agree with others who say find a cheaper beater to get modded if you wish to mod.

After today playing a Rivera Knucklehead, Goodsell Black Dog, Straub twisted triode and a ceriatone Trainwreck and having their clocks cleaned by a stock '65 Fender Bassman head (basically a 50 watt, non-master Marshall), I don't necessarily think you can easily find a Marshall variant that will touch a good stock Marshall with or without a decent pedal. Build a Metro kit and you'll never look back.

Buy it, Mod it, and put Yellow Tolex on that Bitch

I never thought an '80 marshall was as collectible as a 60s-early 70s marshall, but a clean/unmolested thirty year old example is just going to go up in value every year... if that isn't the definition of something that is collectible, what is? I just think it's not a real smart move to mod something that is easily attainable in a less collectible shape.

Pete

Just buy it and mod it if that is what you like.
I know a guy with modded early 60's Marshalls.
You're buying it to play, not to collect.
Once it's yours, do what you want with it.
