So it seems like I blew my back out and I might be going in for operation number six. For the foreseeable future moving my rig is probably out of the question. Lifting anything heavy results in pain that goes on for weeks. My son recommends that I get a good distortion pedal to use with my Magnum 44 and a 1 x 12 cab I have loaded with a greenback. I always bring a visual sound Jekyll and Hyde pedal and the Magnum 44 to every gig just in case I would experience amp meltdown. For practice I have used the Jekyll and Hyde pedal into my effects, into the Magnum 44, and into the cab and it sounded okay. It did not sound good enough to gig.
I remember somebody from rig talk had a demo of the Magnum 44 with the hot British pedal, if I remember correctly it sounded really good. I've been checking out the hot British pedal and the older, Carl Martin plexitone pedal.

Are there any pedals you would recommend that I could use as kind of a preamp?

Not to sound cheap but what about a Line6 M9 or M5 into the M44? Gives you more than 1 pedal effect

If your band practices and plays gigs with a p.a. I would say this is a perfect opportunity to just go direct with a Kemper or AxFX.
Just carry a bag and a guitar.

I want a Kemper, I would like something in the mean time if possible. I am looking to do something like this until I can save up for the Kemper:

The Iron Maiden band plays venues that don't put guitars into the pa so perhaps the Kemper - power amp - cab would work as well.
I'll be trying some of this stuff out soon or I won't be playing live too much more. I may grab a Kemper from one of the places that gives unconditional returns and try it.

Sorry to hear that Mike!!! I have back problems, but will never get surgery!!! Using a 1X12 or even a 2X12 is a good idea. I do not know about the 44 Magnum except for the Dirty Harry movies!!

How about the Suhr Riot for a distortion pedal?

Are you referring to this clip abt the Magnum?

The distortion there is the Radial Bones London. I had it for about a year in front of a non-master volume tube head and it sounds VERY good. Can get the hot rodded Marshall tone for days and lots to be tweaked too. Plus it's got basically dual master volumes so you got your solo boost with a slightly different tone if you need one. Compact as well. I guess the only downside would be that it's not battery operated due to the high power consumption (or sthing like that I recall reading from the manual). It's the one pedal I can recommend and would buy again in a heartbeat if stolen .

The older Plexitone is a great pedal too. It's about two times the size of the Radial though. Comes with it's own power cord. I'd say the difference between the two is the Plexitone can get a bit cleaner plexi type break-up easier but I gotta confess I never tried the Radial that way if it could achieve it.

Not to push the "pedals of the month", but it seems one of either the Bogner Blue or Red might work well for you. And, they both have the built-in boosts, which would give you more flexibility. It might be worthwhile to get some kind of clean boost pedal with an eq as well, so if you disengage the distortion pedal, the clean boost can give you a decent clean sound as well. Just a thought.

Firstly, sorry to hear about your back.
I know from first hand experience how much of a drag a bad back can be.
All the best for a speedy recovery.

You should check out the Koch Pedaltone, it ticks a lot of boxes.

* All tube 4x 12ax7 tubes
* Independent channels clean, crunch, high gain
* Adjustable footswitchable 0.5w all tube single ended power amp with drive & vol controls
* Effects loop- fully buffered bypass function
* Can be used for recording or plug straight into a PA.

For something less costly, that Radial & Magnum combo sounded pretty cool.

So you want the Bare basics with out giving up too much... is there a budget requirement? if not...
Pete Thorn did a cool vid recently of using a bogner red preamp pedal and a two notes cab in pedal format and thats it, it completely does away with all the heavy items/cabs and whatever (it has power amp stimulators 6l6/el34/kt88 plus mics stimulator plus multiple style cabs),
i think i might aquire a two notes cab for the times that i am unable to use my main rig (home/hotel/off stage room etc) both pedals would fit into my guitar case and would go direct to PA if i was to use it in band practice if my rig wasnt availible.
I have a two note torpedo live incoming for my main rig so that i can do away with the 4x12, mics, volume issues......
As i get older... less is more! think my back would agree too.

Dude, I use to run a Crate power block and a Crunch box for practice. It freakin sounded awesome. If I put that thing behind my jcm 800, most wouldn't have known the difference. I imagine those crunch boxes go for cheap now, but at one time they were the flavor of the month.

Look at the gap between the vertebrae right above the big screws, there is no gap. That will be the next fusion. On the bright side, I will not shrink.....
