Looks like I may have a bad power tube in my 5150 II. The amp blew the main fuse. When I put a new main in and turned the amp on it blew one of the internal fuses. I'm getting power to the tube heaters, but no standby or output. Hopefully it's just a power tube issue and I won't need a tech. So, now I need a new quartet of 6L6's to replace my 5 year old JJ's.

Is the current SED -C- still the king of the hill?

Eric

I really dig the Sovtek 5881WXT+ as well as the Winged =C= 6L6

Cheers,

Thanks Greg. I hope the issue is a bad tube. Hopefully the fuses did their job and protected all the small components. I don't want to invest any big $$$'s repairing the amp right now. As I have plans to send it to Jerry next year for his 120 watt metal mod.

I recently grabbed a quad of Rubys for my peavey and they sounded great. So I popped 2 out and into a DGS Proluxe (5e3 that takes 6v6 or 6l6) and they sounded great in that too.

Got a quad of Ruby's for $40 for my Budda. Sounded as good if not better than the JJ's that were in there. Can't go wrong at that price.

The Sovtek 6L6WXT+ is a sleeper badass in the world of 6L6s. Sturdy as hell with excellent tone.

+1

Glassier top end compared to 5881's in my experience.

That's cool. I have a quad of those sitting around already. I was going to use them to test the amp. That might save me a few $$$'s.

Thanks guys.

Got some winged C's coming for me Herbert this week, I'll chime in after I spend a
few hours with them.

i've been hearing great things about the ruby's, but it seems like most of the people that are recommending them are of the high gain school. do they work well for the more moderate levels of death and destruction?

Gain at noon on the Budda and I play with single coils. I've got a ways to go before getting into death and destruction tone, so yes.

Like I mentioned, mine went into a 5e3 (tweed deluxe). With lower output singles the cleans are warm and smooth, the crunch thick (Neil Young style).

thanks for the opinions. i might give them a go for the next round in my cornford.

i'm digging the 6L6WXT+ currently , sounds good to my ears

I second that motion.

Sovtek 6L6WXT+ is the standard for me. great price and very durable.

SED winged C's if money doesn't mean anything to you

I like the TAD 6L6's, have tried both versions and both are nice.

=C='s are still my favorite, but pretty pricey now.

I like the TAD's in my Fenders and the Winged C's in my high gain amps.
