Hi all,

I am curious what you use at home when practicing / playing by yourself and Why?

I use a Line6 X3 live into a Crown PS-400 and an ear candy 2x12. It is versatile enough for anything I am working on. I use the solid state stuff because it saves me money on tubes. I only breakout the tube amps when recording or live.

I was never able to downsize for practice. My live rig has always been my practice rig also.

I have 2 rigs I use currently and just depends on which is at the studio at the time.

Marshall DSL50 with Fortin Mods and a 2x12 with g12h30s
Peavey XXX stock with over sized 2x12 with XXX speakers

Peavey is getting most of the rehearsal time lately. Have it on the loose setting and eq'd more like a marshall. Sounds great but needs a retube pretty soon.

tech 21 trademark 10. Sounds great at whisper levels, sits right next to my computer in the basement so I can practice and learn songs. If I'm learning a new song or just practicing scales I don't need to br loud, in fact I think playing loud is detriment to learning right. Sometimes I play unplugged.

I agree with you.

Don't laugh, its a Metal Zone into computer speakers w/ a subwoofer. I actually don't want a great tone to practice with, otherwise I get lost in strumming open chords and listening to the nuances of a great amp.

Usually a Hiwatt DR103 with a 4x12 and a bunch of pedals. Oddly enough my live rigs are sometimes smaller

I agree with you.

Curios how you guys find practicing loud detrimental? Can you elaborate?

I find that as my tube amps respond completely differently to touch depending on their volume. This dynamic response can alter the way you plan entirely. For me practicing under the same conditions as a live gig are important.

I play through my interface into Reaper with the LePou XTC vst and LeCab loader with GuitarHack impulses. Sometimes I'll use TS' secret (vst) to boost.

Tone =/= good, but it is much more suitable than loud volumes during the morning/night when I can typically play.

I just ordered my new practice rig yesterday. Magnum 44 and a AMT S1. They should be here by the weekend hopefully. Video review to follow.

Seems like a lot of folks are going this route. What cabinet are you going to play through?

I practice unplugged and use my acoustic a lot. I will sometimes plug in a Presonus Firebox and use Guitar Rig but mostly I prefer using my acoustic guitar.

Depends where I am and what I'm trying to accomplish.

I've been living at my GF's house for more than a year, but she doesn't have the room I need for anything elaborate so I use a Peavey Vypyr 15 and iPod to noodle around and learn new stuff.

If I'm at my house, where my "studio" is (aka Madison Spare Bedroom) I either use one of my two rack rigs or an Eleven Rack into my DAW. The large rack rig (there is a build thread on here somewhere...) has an Eleven Rack, a Midiverb III effect processor, shelf mounted stomp boxes and an EQ into a Mesa Simul 2:90 and out to a pair of Avatar 2x12 cabinets with a mix of Vintage 30 and CL80 speakers. The small rack rig has a Mesa V-Twin pre amp, a Midiverb III effect processor and a Peavey Classic 60 tube power amp. I run this out to the same pair of Avatar 2x12 cabinets.

Like someone else mentioned, my "live" rig is simpler than my two rack rigs (a Hughes & Kettner Switchblade 100 Head / Carvin 4x12) but that's only because I still have work to do on my large rack rig. I'll be using it live once I can find the time I need to finish tweaking and organizing presets and programming the MIDI board. The H&K will then be a practice / backup rig.

I usually practice with my Boss GT-10 into some KRK monitors turned very low.....

Practice what does that mean? Anyway, who has the time to practice here?

Let's be serious: Boss Micro BR (90% of the time). Unplugged or Boss GT8 into a small amp or speakers.

Either an Egnater TM2X12 with Scumback M75's or an Egnater 1X12 with a Scumback H75. I also have a 2X12 with Celestion E80's that I will try it with as well.
