What makes a good Flying V ?

Hi guys,

It's been a long time I'm having an heavy GAS about Flying Vs. Unfortunately where I live right now there is almost nothing to try, either in the shops or in the classified. So my only way of getting one is on internet.

However the feedback on the current Gibson Flying V line is medium to bad So according to you, what makes a good Flying V ? What are the aspects to be aware of ? Is there anything good in the current production guitars, should I go only for second hand (and so, which years are the good ones ?), or will it be easier to go to a luthier ?

There is a good (!) silverburst V for sale in Denmarik right now. I've owned it and it plays good!

I cost around 1,2k euro.

I find them to be fairly tight without a lot of sustain. I like the fret access on them though. They are a little awkward to play at first, but sort of grows on you. I own two Gibson V's. My other one is a custom shop model. But, I have this one up for sale in the Classifieds. It's cheap and easy enough to recover from if you don't like it.

I almost had Gibson make me one but they couldn't deliver one with ebony fretboard, so I backed out.

How is the KH ? It's exactly the kind of V that I would like, but it's a bit too much pricewise.

Don't buy the 60's spec one, buy the 50's spec Korina (african limba wood)........ they kick sand in the face of Les Pauls

Yeah, Korina seems to be the wood of choice for a good sustaining V. I don't know about kicking sand on a LP though.....

It's a nice set up. The custom spec neck is great, sounds awesome too. And, it's got the looks. Only a 150 made and they seem to be gone, except for a few here and there. I bought it to hang onto more than anything. But, did gig with it and it's a fun guitar to play.

OK, noted. Korina is like a brighter mahogany, right ?

There is a beautiful Classic White at Thomann, damn expensive too... Less than the KH anyhow, but still 3800 eur.

It's a shame that Gibson doesn't do anything between the 1000 eur for Standard Vs and the 3800 eur Custom Shop range

A V I owned that was a killer guitar all around was a Dean V79. Korean, so pretty cheap to buy, once I swapped out pickups it was a rock and metal machine. Great guitar, if you can get around the Dean headstock.

if you're ok with it not being a Gibson the Washburn V's are nice.

gibson v's are all i play, i have 3. they are at most five years old, until i afford a custom shop model my white/cream v is my main guitar and i wouldnt change that for anything ive played so far.

so i would recommend them you have to play therm and find a good one though, sometimes it seems to me that gibson isnt totally consistent

I had this v custom built and I still can't get use to it I played lespauls 4 ever maybe that's why I don't know but it a neck thru body rock maple and mahonogy wings

The Gibsons I've had varied but overall I find the ones with smaller pickguards and not painted solid are more resonant.
