BMan?

I really love that purr on the lower notes.

Ugh, I've hated that tone since I got Merry Axemas right when it came out.

one of my least fav tracks on Merry Axemas. Maybe, that's why I never got into JB.

IDK, Strat into a COD, or Bman.

BTW, check out the tracks on that CD from:

Brian Setzer
Steve Vai
Steve Morse
Eric Johnson

all four are absolutely jaw dropping

Satch's and KW Shepherd's tracks, on the other hand, make me want to rub one off with steel wool.

  One man's trash...

I have that album, too. I love the EJ track and the Sambora track. Not necessarily for the Sambora tone, but that I am able to come up with a cool "O Holy Night" arrangement because of it.

Can't stand Satch's tone anymore. Love the Vai track...Morse's is cool but don't like the compressed tone.

I don't know whether an SL, BMAN, or COD would get your closer, but I find the biggest part of that very vocal Jeff Beck tone is doing the clapton woman tone but with a single coil bridge pickup and less drive.

So, Strat with the bridge pickup, bridge pickup tone control most or all the way down, and the amp EQ settings full up or at least very bright to make up for the tone control settings.

I've heard people call it the "distorted harmonica tone."

Of course, Beck's also been "fingericking" per se since the very early 80's, so picking it with your thumb may also lend a bit to the vocal timbre.

I would think a COD or SL would get you the closest. Maybe a XMAN....but I think a COD or SL w/ the right speakers would be best...

Thanks guys for the responses.

I have the SL and it is close but a little too clean; however, I am sure some of that
has to do with the clean Classic 80 speakers. I bet a greenback or such would
yield better results.

also sounds like the amp is pretty loud in whatever environment he's recording.

speaker distortion MIGHT be a big part of the sound you need.

so, yeah, greenbacks might be what you want!

I remember reading that Jeff Beck likes to set the amp fairly bright and use his guitar volume and tone knobs to control the overall tone.

I think the speakers make a big difference here. Sounds like he's using Greenbacks or G12H30s or something. Definitely agree w/ muudrock...sounds like his amp is pretty bright, and he's using a tone knob to warm it up.
