now that the axe-fx II is gone, and my old gnx4 ain't cuttin it....i need to move on and get something that will work. i still have my eleven rack, but it's mounted in my studio, so i need another device. i was getting ready to pull the trigger on another eleven rack on ebay when someone at another forum mentioned the Laney Ironheart IRT studio amp/preamp. never heard of it. i checked out some videos and it sounds like something i can use. no midi though, so i wouldn't by able to easily add an effects unit and control channels plus effects through one pedal. i wasn't changing anything on the axe-fx but my guitar volume, but it would be nice to have the option.

i need some opinions on what else to try. the eleven rack would do me just fine, so that's the backup plan. but i hate to pass up some new technology that would be better. the Laney would be a strong contender because it is already setup and voiced pretty close to what i already want.

i am not mic'ing a cabinet. direct is the way i've been running for years now, so i'm not going back to a big rig based on a head and pedals.

what else should i be considering?

i forgot that i still have a Rocktron Prophesy sitting in a rack that could be used, but the direct sound sucks. i would have to get a better cab sim. i used an eleven rack as a cab sim for it once and it sounded 1000% better.....so that is another option. i would just need to buy something like a torpedo cab or some other cab sim.

The Behringer Ultra G cab sim is actually pretty decent and only like $30.

The Torpedo Cab is nice. If it's just for recording, ReCabinet is cheap and sounds great. I use it for my direct recordings with my AMT preamps. The Torpedo WOS is supposed to be nice as well.

i tried the behringer years ago, and it wasn't too good. it was better than the rocktron, but not on par with the eleven rack or axe-fx for sure.

how about redbox or palmer?

was pondering my live church rig delima and trying to decide between going with a di/cab emulator, or another eleven rack....or whatever.

first up, the cheap options like behringer and redbox cab sims. then palmer.

i listened to recordings of every cab emulator that i could find and nothing is even close to the two notes torpedo. add to that; you can clone your own cabinet and load it into the box. or you can download someone else's cab. it does other things like power tube modeling, which is a huge bonus.

my delima:

1) buy the two notes torpedo to make my old prophesy II sound good. basically, $500 to get the prophesy's 3 amp types to sound good. 3 amps are about all i use, so at least those 3 would be the best they could be. i could also use the torpedo in the studio with any preamp/pedal that i wanted to use. i'm really afraid that this option would give me GAS to buy old tube preamps and return to the rack of doom (minus power amp and cabinet of course).

2) just get another eleven rack. $300 and i could get by and not have much issues at all. i would have more amp models to choose from, but i really only use 2-3 anyway. i already have a midi pedal to work with either of the first two options.

3) rp500 or rp1000. $200-300. i could easily go back to one of those and leave it at church. i didn't have any complaints from anyone when i did use the rp1000 years ago. doesn't "feel" as real as the first two options, but then again.....i'm only playing 3-4 songs per week on it, so who cares? right?

i normally go with the general consensus on these decisions. i could go either way.

what would YOU do?

Two-Notes Torpedo is awesome! I love mine and use it daily. As you said....if you get that urge to get a new tube amp, it is still there for you to use direct.

The other option of the Eleven Rack is also a nice economical solution. I had one and I liked it. It works and sounds good.

Why not work with your current 11R and put it into a soft rack case. Use it for both home and studio and save some $$$ while you are at it.

my studio has the eleven rack sitting right on top the desk with other components and a monitor on top, so it would be a pain to pull out of there every time.

right now, i'm considering one of the following:

1) eleven rack
2) torpedo cab sim
3) Laney Lionheart IRT studio amp/preamp

11R

yeah, the eleven rack makes all kinda sense. i have hundreds of presets already, including close versions of the Laney tone. i'm sure i could get that Laney fairly easily with the eleven rack.

GAS deflating.....

Yeah the presets is the first thing that popped into my head.

I'm working on a clip for that Extreme batch you sent me by the way. :)

cool man. you definitely rock my presets for sure. can't wait to hear the new clip.

have you heard that there is a new stand alone editor avid is releasing? maybe even another expansion pack.

11r definitely a cool unit. Singtall, your presets were awesome. I sold my 11 r though....I kept constantly tweaking and tweaking and trying this and that...instead of playing LOL

I'm still using some 11R presets you sent me. You make that thing shine! I'd say go with what you know.

Get a used Kemper, spend $30-40 on profiles and you are done.

Thanks man!
They're great presets and certainly let me focus on playing rather than programming.

I didn't!
That's great to hear! I was under the impression they were phasing out the unit but this is welcome news!

HA! It's free!

i sold the axe-fx II to help my mom pay some healthcare bills.

but even if i wouldn't have had to sell for that reason, i was gonna sell it in the future anyway. just too much money tied into a piece of gear that i spent more time tweaking then playing. for a studio that needs to stock a bunch of gear it would have been cool, but for just me.....not so much. i like one basic tone, so why have hundreds? and just about every firmware update changed something, then i had to tweak again. a vicious cycle.
