What pedal to buy for my '69 Plexi clone?

I really like the boss sd-1w with my plexi. Pretty much any tube screamer variant I tried sounded great as well, with some being better than others for my tastes, but I just preferred the sd-1w because it has a bit more teeth and was a little more balanced tonally.

I am thinking I want to use this Plexi build as a pedal platform instead of modding it. .... I was hoping to make this build a little more diverse. Since it's organically so clean, I think a pedal is probably the way to crunch it up, so I can always switch back to clean instead of sending it out for a Splawn-like channel mod.

I'm not sure how loud you are playing it but IME crunching up a plexi set clean and goosing a cranked plexi are very different as far as pedal choice. If there is that big bright cap across the Bright channel volume it's difficult to get a really dirty pedal to sound good when set clean unless you either bridge channels or use a y-cable. Even then it can be difficult to dial in. And it will still always want to be loud but it can sound good. A lot of the suggestions so far are great for goosing a cranked amp (I haven't heard all of them).

I don't know that that would suffice with this amp. I have a pre-PIMV on my 1959SLP and I'm told that's what makes the loop sound so good. A post-PIMV, I'm told, would overload the loop. It also has a cascade mod, which adds the gain.

Besides that, even if I dime this head, it's not nearly crunchy enough. So how would any kind of master volume get me there without a pedal?

Wait a minute... are there kits to build Metro's again?

Valvestorm sells all the stuff you need, including build instructions. I had some of the parts already and cobbled some other stuff together in addition to buying a lot of the stuff from Valvestorm.

I can't imagine a Helios would need any kind of distortion or OD pedal. I have an SLO, a 5153 Stealth, an Egnater Seminar, a DSL 50, a JMP 2204 and two more 100w Plexis. Only the '69 Plexi could use a pedal. The rest are high gain monsters and not at all in need of a pedal. How could a Bogner need one?

A lot of guys myself included use ODs as a clean boost , gain off and volume cranked up . Tightens up the low end and adds some grit and saturation to the tone that the amp won't get on its own no matter how much gain it has unboosted . Back off the gain a little on the blue channel of you Stealth or DSL and hit em with that TS pedal you've got. You might like it you might not but I can't live without a OD clean boost . The one amp that I felt didn't need it was the red channel of the EVH

Yes, I do this with my DSL 50 sometimes. But it's strictly a boost and would do nothing to add gain or crunch up my Plexi clone. It's really no different than when I was using an Xotic EP Booster.

As noted above, the Klon stuff is nice. I also really like both the Tim and the Timmy pedal. I am sure you can find something that will fit the bill for you. :)

And even though it's 2 pedals; a klon into a Timmy can be really, really nice and has a decent amount of available distortion with several different levels, clean-just klon-just Timmy-both.

Shannon Helios Overdrive. Under the radar and hard to find, but such a killer pedal.

Got the gold colored PlexiTone today and absolutely love it. It's very powerful and best on the lower settings. I would make a video, but I blew my head up. Saw a white flash and it died. The power tubes still glow evenly, but it's going to the shop. Will try it with my DSL 50 later.

Turned out to just be the HT fuse. I had the head at 4 ohms into a 16 ohm cab at high volume because I forgot that my tech always uses 4 ohms because that's what his cab in the shop is rated at. Stupid mistake. All fixed now.

This. Boosts aren't always just for more gain..the nature of the gain and feel of the amp changes with boost pedals. I boost everything, if it's high gain already I just back the gain off a bit. Only amps that I've tried that didn't like a boost very much was the Fryette Deliverance and any Cameron modded Marshalls, including this Aldrich Sovtek I now own.

Hmmm...
