I have a Splawn SS2 with a Seymour Duncan® Custom 5 Bridge Humbucker and I cant get down with it in this guitar. I have one in my Charvel MZ ( mahogany body ) and I really like but its just dull in the Splawn which has an Alder body.

I have an Aldrich in one of my LPs which I like but not sure that I want another one. I toyed with swapping pups out years ago but I cant say that I recall how I like the Invader, Screamin Demon or Super distortion today.

I know I dont dig the SD Custom 5 in the Splawn. Guess im looking for ideas. I play 80s hair metal in a cover band using a 5153. Help.

Bare Knuckle Holy Diver
SD RTM
Dimarzio TZ
EMG 85 bridge
Mightymight motherbucker

Add the Painkiller. Sounds great in an alder strat.

its pretty hard to go past a JB or Tonezone for 80's metal in an alder body strat...eother should be a perfect match for a splawn

This is a hard one because a Custom 5 is typically anything but dull...in fact if I could have any complaints about it, it would be that it can be too scooped and spiky. How heavy is your guitar?

The Duncan Distortion was a go-to pickup for 80's metal and usually sounds good (if you like that sound) in just about anything...probably a good place to start. The regular Duncan Custom might be a better choice as well.

Is there a tone AND vol knob? If so, super distortion. If only a vol pot, then 250k vol alone with JB is what is often suggested.

For my part, Strat with Alder body is Duncan JB with 250k volume pot!

I have the stock JB in my 87 Kramer Pacer. The body is Poplar though. That guitar is the best sounding guitar I own. The pot is 500K. I would go with the 500K unless it's too bright for you. I personally haven't had any luck with the 250K pot with the JB. But, that doesn't mean it won't work for you.

JB and super distortion are the first that come to mind.

I think an aldrich would work well too (PM me if you go this route as I have one available I am not using).

I run an Anderson H2+ in my fat strat, great pickup, but I think one of the 3 I mentioned above would work better for what you want....

JB looks like a very promising choice. I already have the jazz humbucker in the neck.

Its weird as I have the SD custom 5 in my charvel and love it. Cant explain it. Might run up to my local GC or SA for a JB.

Dimarzio AT-1 all the way. Have one in my Am. Deluxe strat and it slays

<-------- In fact, that's it in my avatar.

The Custom 5 is a great match in those Mahogany Charvels....The guitar itself has a dense midrange , the custom 5 has a laid back midrange so they blend nicely together.... Alder is a different story , its naturally scooped in comparison to mahogany so the JB is a great match... This is still generalizing though , every guitar is unique .

If my ebay auctions go the way I want Ill chuck theis Splawn and pick up another Charvel MZ.....know anyone who has one ????

Warren D. from Ratt said the Duncan JB changed his life. I have them in both my super strats. All you'll need is some Aquanet and you're set!

I like Anderson H2+ in the bridge and H1- or H1 in the neck !

I prefer the Adrich. Fat, huge tone.

The Super Distortion is great as well.
