Just wondering...

Not saying I'm interested just yet, just wondering...

Let me know, carry on, nothing to see here :D

I had the Fryette 2/50/2 and 2/90/2 and the Art SLA 2 when I had mine. I liked the 2/50/2 the best at the time. I've since heard/played the Axe with a better quality SS power-amp and found I like it with SS even better than with the tubes. With the tubes, it's easier to get the tones you want out of the gate. SS takes a little more tweaking but since you use the power-amp sims, I find you get more differentiation between the amp types. With the tube power amp and the axe power-amps off, the amp models tend to start sounding alike.

Good info, thanks... I've got a Fryette 2:90:2 coming for my Mak 4 so I thought I might add an Axe to the rack seeing as I'll have a rack to play with (no pun intended, especially with Juggernaut floating around :hys: ). Just a consideration right now, and seems the prices are getting more in line with my concept of 'an accessory' rather than a necessity or complete 'religion'.

Ahem... ;)

What was the other SS power amp?

I use a SLA 2 and it sounds great. I also have been using my Return on the 20th A Xtc w/Bogner 4x12 V30s and the Return on my Mesa Mk III combo (for an open back flavor) in stereo. It adds a different flavor but still sounds good, I just turn off the Cab Sims. I havent tried my RT2/50 amp yet.

I record direct into my mac with Apogee Duet and Garage band and luv the recording tones I get also. Its great when you also want to have full sound at low volumes.

Has anyone tried the Atomic Reactor FR Cabinet or the Reactor FR Mono Block 50W Power Amp.
I wonder how they sound with the axe fx

I don't know. Mortega76 owns it. Peavey something. Definitely had more balls than the ART

I have 3 Poweramps that I switch between :D

1. QSC Plx1602. This power amp is all about clean power. 1600 W bridged in Mono. Enough said. Works perfect with my axe. No problem sounding tube
2. Atomic Mono block. Just got it last week. A really cool product that I wish they did as a rackmount. 50 W, 2x6L6. Really warm and tube sounding. Going to try it out this weekend at the Pantera tribute gig for the first time.
3. Crate Powerblock. This is just a backup poweramp but it packs well enough power to support a gig. And it's light as hell!

You can mount it on a rack tray fairly easy.

As far as SS, there is a reason Atomic used tubes. Just saying...

Doesn't Randal make an amp that switches tube sets - 6L6 or EL34s? That would seem to be the ticket since the amp models would work better with their respective "real" tube sets.

Yeah But it wont fit in my 4HE rollerrack together with my Axe then.

I use a 2/90/2 and love it to death.
I have used many other poweramps out there,
tube: 2/50/2, 2:90, 2:100, E840/50 & E850/100
SS: SLA1, SLA2, crown K1

& slaved a framus cobra, 5150, JVM410 & an RM100

If i was trying to emulate a certain amp's tone I would use a SS poweramp because of the poweramp sims. The fryette/vht amp have a voicing i just can't get enough of, although you can't get a proper replication of another amp's tone this way, it has allowed me to create a sound of my own that I really could not be happier with. I'm not a huge fan of the stock sovteks in the 2/90/2, i swapped mine out for SED winged C's and the other guitarist in my band has a matching rig and has JJ's in his, both gave the amp more openess and liveliness. There's just something about Kt88's i really dig.

I found dedicated poweramps sound much clearer than FX returns of an amp head, i prefer the 2/90/2 over the 2/50/2, then the ENGL poweramps, then the mesa ones. I didn't like the 2:90 that much, it was too loose sounding for me next to the 2/90/2. Haven't tried an RT 2/50 but I'm perfectly happy with the 2/90/2 and not looking to swap it out any time soon.

Cheers man! i thought it was quite fitting.
I won't settle for what I have until I've tried all possible alternatives I guess. Because i live in australia we do have to fly to some shows whilst touring which means I often have to use whatever backline i can hire or borrow, and i'll just run my axefx into that. I also have a lot of friends who have some pretty neat gear so that's how i've managed to try all that stuff out

Agreed - you've got one of the best "for real" sigs on this forum mate...!!

Hey, question for you - when you swapped out the Sovteks and replaced them with SED's, did you have to re-bias the 2:90:2 or did you just need a matched quad and slap 'em in without any fuss?

Thanks for the 411,
V.

You actually only need 2 matched pairs because the channels run independently. I re-biased it but I guess if you somehow got tubes with the same rating you mightn't have to re-bias. That being said it's always good to check it anyway, the 2/90/2 has easy to find bias points on the inside of the chassis, I actually use one of those bias probes with a socket that goes between the tube socket and the tube and that works well for me.

VHT 2/50/2 or 2/90/2 if I am going 2 rack spaces.

If I don't mind more, the Mesa Simul Satellite is BADASS with the Axe Fx.

Currently, I have the 2/50/2.
