Alright So its time for new preamp tubes, Just replaced the power section with the trusty SED =C= 6L6GC's and those are THE tube for the power section but ive never experimented with preamp tubes as i love the tone i have im debating between sticking with the mesa tubes or going with all tun-sol reissue tubes. Hmm those with a mark IV would love to hear some feed back.

I put a NOS telefunken smooth plate in v1 of my mark IV...best $40 I ever spent!

I went with 7th gen chinese 12ax7 and they sounded great mixed with winged C power tubes.

Hmm Has anyone tried the Doug preamp cocktail?

Yep :D I think it was great all around... and Doug is awesome to deal with too

I was reading where the TAD 12AX7's are designed after the smooth plate Telefunken and produce the same sound.

arnt those 150$?

Well, I found got mine in a partial trade/sale but I see them on ebay used pretty cheap.

I think tung Sol Reissues are a good bet. I have a mixture of NOS and EI pres in mine. At one time I had all JJ's and I almost sold the mark IV at that point. So if you mix and match use the JJ's sparingly.

What I did for mine is bought a few brands, and tried each one in V1 and wrote down my findings. I put the best one in V1 and then moved to V2. This took alot of time, but I am pleased with how the amp sounds, so it was worth it.

I need to give those 9th gen chinese tubes a try, never been a fan of the older chinese tubes.....
