what rigs do you take out to an open mic or smaller gigs?

do you use combo amps, still head/cabs, digital modelers?

There are only two places around here that do "Open Mic" shows and there are not many options for either. At one, everything is setup and you play your guitar through their amp(s). At the other, you can take your own amp but it needs to be a small combo. There is no time between acts to setup anything elaborate...

A Di for Accustic or if I'm playing electric I'll take a modeler! GNX4 from Digitech.

I had Jerry "Surreal" build me a combo for just this activity!

Well, smaller places for blues band activities...

Pedalboard into whatever amp is there.

I hate open mic nights. Only ever done them as "tryouts" to get a gig. They're usually a horrendous shitshow.

I play in a house band for a open mic night. I bring a Boogie combo MK III with a Bogner Red and TC Nova delay. Keep it simple for myself and everyone else. I agree with Nick it can be a shit show but having the same group of guys be the host band works out well.

The last open Mic night I did, I had about 3 minutes to set up, while the house guitar player hovered over me, heckling every member of my band.

"Look at this guy, his pedal board is pretty. No Boss pedals, only the finest for this gentleman right here!!!"

Haven't done one it quite a while but there was typically an amp there.
I would just take my small board.
Tuner, Keeley Baked TS-9, Boss DD-5.
That little board always sounds great. Classic.
The Keeley TS-9 has three times the gain of a standard TS-9 so it always smokes.

That sounds like a perfect little rig that any player should be able to make work for them.

I'm sure I would have had a smart ass comment for that guy.
Best response though is to kill it up there. Make him irrelevant.

A BCB-60 with:

Hardwire HT-6 Polyphonic Tuner
MXR NOISE CLAMP
BOSS Power Stack
BOSS BF-2 FLANGER
MXR CARBON COPY
EHX 44 Magnum
Hughes & Kettner Red Box D.I.

That's it--can go into a cab with the 44 Magnum or straight to the board with the Red Box.

Which is exactly what we did! :D

I actually talked to the dude afterwards, and he's a really nice guy. But in that moment, I was like "OK, lets put the house band to shame here..."

Lol. I heckle the other bands but it's in good fun. I never heckle anyone wet behind the ears, but always heckle someone who looks like they take themselves too seriously. Always heckle the dude rolling into a small venue with a full stack. "Whoa, looks like we're playing Wembley tonight boys, thank god my roadie right here can set up my rig... son... don't look me in the eyes that's a privilege not a right... son, those aren't my settings... I'm not paying you to be useless... that's it, you're fired, I'm printing your ticket home right now!"
