What transformers should I put in my jtm45 build?

MM is nice but out of budget.

I have great results with heyboer.

I have one build with classic tone and it does sound pretty damn good.

What about Hammond? I have never used them.

Please share your thoughts and experiences. Much appreciated.

Cheers.

I would never spend what MM cost. I read somewhere that Chris Merren said, if he didn't make his own, he'd buy ClassicTones. That was good enough for me. CTs sounded fine in my JTM 45 build.

I have Classic Tone replacements in a 1959 and it sounds good to me, but I haven’t tried any of the others.

I will probably go classic tone then. Would it be worth it to spend a little more on the choke? The price difference is not a whole lot.

Yes, add choke.

I know that I need a choke, is there any reason to buy a better one than classic tone? They are cheap in comparison to the OT and PT.

My Splawn has Classic Tones, and I'm pretty sure the Bogner Helios I had did as well.

both of my splawns are heyboer. 2008-2008ish IIRC

i priced out classic tone v. heyboer, and heyboer is $50 more total for PT OT and Choke. I will be going heyboer for that little price difference. i chatted with one of their guys on the phone. also most of the mojotone transformers are heyboer, i verified that with the guy from heyboer that the ones i am looking at ARE heyboer. he even took the time to compare the classic tone specs to heyboer, and the heyboers out spec classic tone by a bit. i like bigger iron. he even said that as such he has no iron in the fire, as they typically wind in the masses and sell in quantity. he said for about $150 more (for the OT PT and choke) he could special order some heavier ones, but that isn't worth it for me.

if anybody else is following the details for their own builds, mojotone part numbers and prices are here:

this is regarding EL34's not KT66's keep in mind.

OT 7021300 $100
PT 7020200 $105
Choke 8022100 $40 (note that is specd for an AC30 choke but it is 20H like he recommended)

$245 isn't bad for good iron in a overbuilt amp.

those are all indeed heyboer and verified by mojo as well when i spoke with them.

If you really want to go accurate, Merren. For everything else I'd go Classictone..I've used them twice and the tone improved both times..Once with a Fortin Cali Ceriatone and the other was a home brew 2204 that I paid 400 for.

I don't know that brand makes much difference with a choke. I just like to order them all from one place for ease of ordering and shipping. I put Merrens in my first build, but could not get hold of him for my second one, so I went to CT and have been happy with them.

If the heyboer guy is saying that the outspec CT, I'd ask for proof since CT actually publishes their specs. You will not get 50 dollars in extra anything going with Heyboer. The only transformer I would recommend from Heyboer is their Metro-spe self lead Dagnall C1998 clone. But you can nearly get a whole Classictone set for price

Heyboer is sending me specs in a few minutes! What is the best way to attach a file here?

Nothing in those specs that indicate better than the classic tone. I would like to point out that 4k for primary impedance for a JTM is not correct. The originals were 8K. Because of the impedance mismatch, thats why the originals really only put out 30-40 watts, but had great tone. The Marshal reissues were typically around 6.5K, I modded the s(*& our of a Marshall RI with the 6.5k primary impedance with a higher gain circuit and silicon rectifier, and it was one of my all time favorite mods. This tells me that he is just selling you a generic off the shelf tranny meant for a 50 watt build that you could use with EL34s or 6L6, but will yield closer to 50 watts, but not be accurate or have the mojo of the JTM45

That is why I said he was brickwalling me. No significant info

Well I plan on running EL34's in the jtm45.

I will harass him more for the real down and dirty.
