What tube amp choose for heavy metal/hard rock warm tone?

Hey :),

I'll buy my first tube amp. Im tired of solid state and digital tones. I have developed the ear to appreciate what a tube amp can offer and Im ready to buy one.

Im looking for a 80 hard rock/rock/heavy metal tone. Warm and woody, with alot of harmonic content and enough gain to get into heavy metal territory. A reference is the tone of the Keeper of the Seven Keys I and II of Helloween or the Jake Lee songs with Ozzy.

I have researched alot. I considered all guitar amp brands: from marshall to mesa, orange, etc.

I discovered that seems to be that Im looking for a Marshall tone. I like the mids, highs and presence of good Marshall tone but I dont have any clue of what amp choose. I cant buy a JCM 800 used because I live in Chile and I cant buy used here. Im looking to buy a brand new amp.

What do you think about the actual Marshall line? what do you recommend?

Get a Marshall JVM.

They do everything from Cleans-High Gain very well.

And it has good features: FX loop, second master volume, indpendant EQs, MIDI options. They sound very good at low volumes as well for home us. :rock:

BTW i use it for that kind of 80s type rock/metal tone.
 
You might consider an EVH 5153 50W...or the 100W. Great amps! :thumbsup:
 
what's your budget? i recommend an orange dual terror. simple, effective, great rock tones, and under $1000.

also, your guitar plays just as important a role in your sound as your amp, so make sure you own something that will allow you to achieve your desired tones in the first place.
 
Depending on your budget I would go with the Marshall JVMs, but if you have money to spare then the Freidman BE-100 or the Cameron stuff (Atomica for sure) would work perfect.
 
Nobody saying MKIII? Boosted R2 is a killer hard rock/metal tone, especially with the right GEQ settings. It can also be surprisingly "Marshally".
 
Mesa mark series can do both rock and heavy metal very well. But if its a Marshall sounds you're after then I'd look into either a JVM or vintage modern.
 
Look at Ceriatone clones. All you need is a JCM800 circuit and a cheap Boss SD-1. IMO, you can get the same tones as these high dollar amps/mods people are recommending.......plus you also get the stock tones. You can't really beat it for the $$$ for those heavy 80's tones.

This sounds like the way to go right here. If a JVM410 is $2199 here in the U.S. I can only imagine what one would cost in Chile. A jcm800 type amp will take you from butt rock to Metallica with the turn of a few knobs and pedal choice.

I gotta admit, I was rather underwhelmed by that tone, even with Phil X playing through it.
 
Get an old pre 80 Marshall jmp with Rodenberg 728NG, spend additional money better on a fender pre 80ties twin (you can even use 2 amps on one speaker =>Tonebone Headbone, than a multichannel monster with typical lame clean and crunch sounds....you can always convert a quite cheap used twin combo into a fender head, much more transportable.
You will get less sizzle and flat sounding amps which will feature your playing better...

This is also an investment, rather than burning money. It is even possible to add a additional gain-stage to your marshall (tuning it by a technician) if you really need over the top distortion.

A cool new amp (I do not like today factory made amps much) is the Orange Rockerverb 50....of the boutique marshall amps the friedmanns are cool, but I do not need their features...

Ceriatone should have a 800 or jmp kit available (would them prefer to todays marshalls, which are flat and one dimensional sounding, nick seems to be very reliable to make business with.

Voodoo V Rock 100 watt single channel amp. That defines warm hard rock and metal. Every 80s tone in there too if you want it. As Mark Tremonti recently said, one of the best amps ver.

Most heavier amps lose warmth on purpose, and are prized for that.

Can you get EL34s in a 5150? Or are you talking about the 6534+ or whatever Peavey came out with?
 
If you're looking for a great simple tube amp to start with, I'd look at the Jet City Amplification line of amplifiers. You get a lot of bang for the buck, most are designed by Mike Soldano, and are available in power ranges from 5 to 100 watts and as combos and stacks. I had the 20w version and liked it very much for hard rock and metal. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
