What was Kirk using for a lead boost in 1988?

TS-9 and a TS-10 were his lead boosts at that time. The TS-10 replaced the TS-9 later on the tour.
The Guitar World axology did state an 88A Midi EQ, but should be the ADA MQ-1
Here is a photo of his rig on that tour.

Now that is a guitar setup - balls to your AXE FX :)

yeah... but I must say I prefered the rigs they used right before switching to the Axe FX. Triaxis /VH4 fr James and Dual Recto (with Randall) for Kirk. The two rigs had a nice blend....

I was thinking about this after guys were ripping Kirk after the new album was released last month...for the amount of crap he gets on forums for being a garbage player with bad tone, too much wah, ect. ect...I always remember his leads from Kill Em' All through The Black Album..they were very memorable and served the songs well. I thought he did a really good job on those albums.

Absolutely. His strength was always playing for the song and creating solos that had dynamics and could be sung/hummed along with and remembered. The last time he really surprised and impressed me was on Load, particularly Bleeding Me and The Outlaw Torn which as has a crazy cool slide part. Nowadays he seems to be chasing the off the cuff bluesy Buddy Guy thing but it comes across sloppy and unpracticed sounding. As Bob Rock once said, he needs to do his homework. Not trying to bag the guy, he's a legend and can play but I don't think he is really connecting with the instrument like he thinks he is these days. I dig his lead on Am I Savage from the new album. Killer tune.

Yikes if Bob Rock said that! But he is right. Malmsteen is on the other side.. he can still play but he OVER plays. He also needs to reconnect with his style.

Bob Rock said that in reference to The Unforgiven solo. He wanted him to do something totally different. In the end Bob said "fine. Do what you want. Let's hear what the guitar player of the year has" and Kirk ripped the solo that's on the album.

I had the ADA MP-1 back in early 90's,got it from a guy that said he got it modded for an extra preamp tube, well I never looked inside but it sounded kickass! I don't even remember what amp I had it plugged into,I only had it for a week because it got stolen along with my earliest release USA Randy Rhoads V..I was and still am pissed about that!

I liked the solo on 'unforgiven ' :aww:

Me too. I think it was the perfect solo for the song. Not very flashy or technical but kicked as IMO

A Mesa Mark III or IV tweaked right and you don't need anything else.

Ehh...I watched that doc again recently, and that scene is pretty obviously edited together. I highly doubt he played that solo right after that conversation. The solo he ends up playing seems to match up with what Bob Rock was suggesting he do, start off low and simpler and build it up as it goes.
