Hey guys wondering what a 80's Mesa half back 4x12 cab with black shadow speakers worth? One of the speakers might be be frozen up, doesn't move like the others do with possible blown coil?

Use eBay's search function, and search on the cabinet (using the "completed listing" option). Then search on the cost of a replacement speaker, and subtract the cost off the cab.

Then toss your number out the window..........because it's eBay. :D

Did they all come with black shadow speakers back then?

I believe you had the option to purchase them either with V30's or C90's.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I believe you could get all 4 MC-90s, 2 MC-90s up top and EVM-12Ls in the bottom, or MC-90s up top and MS-12s on bottom. I had a slant one before with all four MC-90s and loved that cabinet. I had to sell it and got maybe $300 out of it. I just bought a straight/slant (where the sides are straight but the baffle is slanted) for $300 or so, but there were G12-65s up top and the MS-12s down below. I put MC-90s back up top and like that cab a lot now. $300 seems to be right around where I see them sell. You might be able to get a little more or have to take less, but right around there. Now with one non-working speaker, it'd be even less...

As a general rule, most common used cabs sell for $250-500. Unless it is a special/rare/vintage cab there is 0 market for used cabs. With a blown speaker I'd offer $150-200, provided you could find a replacement speaker for under $100.

300-500 seems to be the going rate. With a bad speaker, that is going to push the value lower. Great cabs, I love mine. I do prefer it with both sections closed. Mine came with ms12s on the top and evm12ls on the bottom, which was never stock. I stupidly sold the ms 12s and put I n some mc 90s. Hn I bought mine, one of the EVs was frozen, but the seller made it right.

Where would you get the other section to make it completely closed back?

Cab is 8 ohms. Mine came with the top section. I think you can still order the top piece from Mesa or just make your own. Great cab, you can't go wrong. I have 6 pretty different amps and the halfback 412 sounds good with all of them, better with some than the others, but I can't say this for my other smaller 212 or 112 cabs which are much more amp specific.

Ooof, I don't like mine much at all... a half back 4x12 with the black shadows and a half back 2x12, same setup. Other than being nice stands for my Mesa Coliseum and Quad, they don't do much for me tone-wise. :( They look cool though... I need to visit the local home depot and cut a few slabs of plywood to seal up the backs. Only bad thing is, the bottom is already sealed, so you'd be basically getting two 1x12s or two 2x12s sealed.

I used to have the 212 version with 2 mc90s and I didn't think much of the cab. I think the key for these cabs is the ms12 or evm12l in the bottom. I do find the mc90s sound better with the back on. With the 212 I had, I didn't make a top back panel, so it was open.

Your old silver jubilee actually sounds pretty darn good into the halfback 412 with both sections closed.

Only time I like the top half open is if I am running one of my vintage fenders into the cab.

Interesting, if I seal it up I may try the Jubilee I bought after I sold you that first one. :) I bought it as a full stack (the 2/3rds size, with 2x12 cabs) and those cabs aren't real great sounding.

I have one of those 212s too, I agree, they don't sound as good as other 212s. I have was et65s in mine. One thing that helped mine a lot was replacing the MDF back with plywood. I even found some original silver jubilee era tolex for sale. With the play wood back, the who cab tightened up in sound and it made the cab sound more lively. Significant change IMO.

Let us know how your jubilee sounds with your 412 halfback cab. :)
