What's a good 'all-around' speaker for a 1x12?

Big no to the Scumbacks. The ones I tried (h75) will be way too smooth/dull with your Rockgrinder.
Which H75's did you have (small dust cap/large, what power/ohm rating? Did you get them directly from me, or used? Just curious.

I checked the Rockgrinder amp page, apparently they have two different 6L6 based models, and two flavors of tone stack setup. I know the M75/H75 mix works with the Friedman "Dirty Shirley" amp, and it's dual 6L6 based.

I'll just add that the Rockgrinder is very picky when it comes to speakers.
I keep force feeding it Greenback variants (because they are one of my favourite speakers) and it just doesn't like them.

i was really digging my cab with emi ms-12's, now that i'm ampless-not so much.

I should have kept my Eminence MS-12's that came in my Mesa boogie halfback 412, those were nice speakers. I wish Eminence would release the MS-12's again under the Eminence brand....

To answer an earlier question, the Egnater 1X12 is closed back. I have one that I ran with a Celestion E80 (CL80 labeled for Egnater according to Bruce E) and a Scumback 100 watt H75. I love them both in their. I don't find the H75 too smooth at all compared to the E80 or a Warehouse E65.

I have an extra E80 in 16 ohms loaded in a half empty 2X12 currently. I would let it go if you were interested. I have another one that I am running in another 2X12 so I don't need it.

has anybody tried the Hellatone 60L in a 1x12? the one that's a V30 but with more lows, which i'm thinking might be good in a smaller cab.

Dude.. im gonna also have to agree with the CL-80 posts. ESPECIALLY for a 1X12.
I personally LOVE my bogner ported Shiva 1X12 cabinet with a Cl80. Its got great tone in my opinion.

Haven't tried it, but I recommend the 75 watt WGS Retro 30.
Compared to the Cel V30 it has more highs, less mids and deeper, tighter lows.

I do have a standard Celestion Vintage 30 in a Homebrew version of the closed back mesa recto 112. That cab is really deep, so there are plenty of lows. It sounds nice with some of my amps and that 112 mixes well with the one that has the CL80....

Um, that F*ucking slay'd. That was some awesome tone from that amp/cab setup.

Maybe I'll throw one in a Bogner cube and try it. I don't like the EVMs in the cube at all, but a V30 is ok. I don't like the CL80s in the Thieles, but maybe the cube...

I'll second that recommendation. The Retro 30 is a great all-around speaker.

Shark Diver - How would you compare the Bogner Cube to the Mesa Thiele? I really want to try the Scumback M75, would you think it would work well in the Mesa Thiele?

I use a Splawn small block in a 1 x12 cab for practice. Its a G12 Heritage copy @ 55 watts. Run my head 100 watt head half power. Sounds good. Also Eminence Governer sounds good.

I tried a greenback in a mesa thiele once while I was waiting for my EVM to arrive...didn't like it. The EVM was much more full and clean. In the end, I liked a Delta Pro 12a the most.

The Cube works well with the V30s I've tried, but not the EVMs at all. I have never tried the Scumbacks in it. Always wanted to. I need to go to Jim's and try some speakers.

Same with the Thiele I have never tried the Scumbacks I loved the EVMs so much. Jim has one of my amps so I'll see if he has some free time to play around with this.

those delta pro's look pretty interesting. i was checking them out on emi's website. strikes me as their version of an ev12.

v30's sound GREAT in 1x12's, in my experience
and I'm usually not a big fan of them in 4x12's

...that will be used with 50W heads and low to moderate volume.

I didn't read all the posts, but I'm a huge fan of the Celestion Gold Alnico 50W drivers. They're ultra sweet sounding, detailed, break up nicely, do cleans super well, do dirt and crunch super well, and even gainier stuff no problems.

They're not cheap - but to me, they're so worth it

Celestion Gold speakers are great, I agree. However a 50Watt alnico Gold with a 50Watt head is just more of a gamble than I would recommend. That's a pretty expensive speaker to risk blowing. For a Celestion Gold in a 112, I would want it to be opened back and have the amp be no more than 30 Watts or so driving it....
