I'm supposed to be picking up a Marshall JCM800 cab tomorrow, loaded with 1978 25 watt/75hz Celestion Black Backs in it. What's the going street value on one of these? I'm doing a trade deal on it, and know what I have in my gear so I don't think I'm going to get hurt on the deal regardless but I was just curious.

78 Blackbacks [which i have] are out-fucking-standing.
If in good shape speakers alone are worth $450 of $550.
Bass cones are 444 codes. Lead cones are T1221. They are inked on the back of the cones.
Snag it Boss.

reissue cabs are going for $700 used, I’d say $900 if in normal condition which isn’t unreal. As said above, somewhere in the ballpark of $850.

I missed out on the exact same spec cab in Cincinnati this or last week. I'd say it's worth around $1000 or more.

I agree, my all time favourite speakers. (But I ‘think’ the lead cones are 1777…)
I have two Bogner 4x12’s loaded with a quad of ‘76 and a quad of ‘78 55hz ‘444’ black backs, Incredible speakers?
I prefer these 55hz over the 1777 cones. Better bass response and tighter.

Half right. 444 is a cone type; T1221 tells you which model speaker it is i.e. G12M25 75Hz. Bass cones typically 444 cone; lead 1777.

If it's a mint or good shape cab; in this market I would say 1500.

Black backs are worth quite a bit these days. A good, clean quad of original late 70's 75hz versions should be around $900-950, in my experience. That's really only $225 or so per speaker. I agree with Racerxrated. If they are in a clean cab, $1500 is reasonable.

I have a 72' Marshall 1960b with a quad of 78' 25w black back 75hz and they are amazing. Very aggressive. EVH all day with a super lead.

By this time, a lot of those 70's speakers, especially 25w's, have been damaged, repaired, ,re-coned etc... So take that into consideration if you're buying the cab loaded. I bought a Wizard 4x12 once with two 25w black backs in it. I had for a couple years and when I pulled the speakers, those two black backs were torn up on the cones. It sounded fine I guess because I never really got it loud enough to notice.

Are these straight cabs?

Slant cab. Cab has been used, but doesn't look like it's been abused. Some tolex scuffing, a bit of tolex missing on the back, etc.. Cosmetic stuff. Supposedly, the speakers are in really good shape and he says it's a matched quad. Not sure what he meant by that, other than maybe these four speakers have spent their entire lives together. He said he bought the cab unloaded, and put those speakers in it. It's a trade deal, and the guy is bringing it over so I can try it out and he can try out my stuff. I plan on examining it pretty good before I commit, but if it's everything he says it is.. I'm doing it.

I have some cabs with the 6404 cones from the '90s and I'm that weird guy that prefers the G12V to the G12M. Not sure if Blackbacks would change my mind.

OP 'Blackbacks' come in many flavours, with the most common being G12M 55Hz, G12M 75Hz, G12H 55Hz, G12H 75Hz.

Do you know what you're actually getting?

Maybe I'm weird but I actually rate those 6402s a notch higher than the BBs. I've had a few BB cabs, with Ms and Hs and they are killer cranked; but kinda flat at lower/mid volumes vs the 6402s or the 74-76 cream backs...I finally found an original 72 slant with all original 1221's and can say there is some special sauce going on with Pulsonic cones.
Cranking those 6402s you can really hear why they are so desired. Fantastic speaker.
