What's the deal with these Klon pedals?

I had one of those back in the mid-90's when they came out and were hyped up quite a bit. Cool boost but really nothing better than a lot of other offerings out there. I sold it a year or two later after I tried a Z Vex SHO.

They quit making this version and soon thereafter the "cork-sniffer" crowd started grabbing them up, much like the original Way Huge pedals that started selling for $500-$1000+. All fine pedals but not worth anywhere near that kind of dough for practical purposes. Collectors drive those prices, not players IMO.

Same thing as those 80s white esp explorers, for some reason they go for big bucks.

Dont even get me started on you older guys with your EVH gear and "Brown sound" chasing that's driven the price of the rest of the cool gear that's left after us Metallica fan boys drove the price of the other crap up.

Not a huge fan of the Brown sound myself :D

I won't even look at a Jem, those Jemsite guys are freaking nuts

Those jem guys are on a whole nother level, lets just not talk about them because I am scared they may show up.

I've wanted one for over 10 years. Still don't have one. Assholes charging way too much, and Gibson being selfish asswipes.

:gethim:

I've got a buddy who has one of those gold horse Klon's the original, the damn thing is busted and theres no way to fix it because of the fact it's got that black epoxy all over it!

Guess he's tried to send it back, but apparently the guy that builds them isn't easy to get to fix that stuff....

Sucks, I know he'd sell it for $1000 in a heart beat haha.

If its already busted, I would try to take a heat gun to heat of the black coating and hopefully remove it. No real harm in trying.

I am amazed at what some of these pedals go for. For me anything over $200, better be very special.

The only board I've ever seen one on is Mark Tremonti's and that was quite a while ago. I think he uses some T-Rex od now. IMO, the pedal is just hyped up and cork-sniffers think it's got some special mojo, when really it just sounds like many other high quality od's.

There's a Maxon pedal that's supposed to be the same...

The OD820.

when I heard the PGS blind shootout, I preferred the Kalamazoo over the Klon, Klon didn't sound that great

I have been using my Klons for eight years and still love them. I sold them a few years back thinking the same as others, that I could get by with other boosts, but then ended up buying them back. I love the tone and still have not found another that does what it does once your ear gets used to it. Sounds great with the gain dimed through a clean amp or with the gain down boosting a distorted amp.

Warren Haynes has used one for a long time now. I am on the hunt for a used Lovepedal Kalamazoo myself after seeing the Pro Guitar Shop vids. I have used boosts for a long time but have had cheaper versions on my board. Right now I have a Micro Amp, Cool Cat Trans OD, and Drive. Both V1. They sound great and get the job done but I still want to try the LPK.

I built a Klon clone. A Klone if you will. Its a very unique OD. I like it even though Im not currently using it. My build cost me under $70 to build with top notch components. The complexity of the build was no different than any other OD ive built. So I do not understand the high price these pedals a getting. Not worth it all. I understand paying for quality components and wiring as well as original design but IMO anything over $200 for an OD is rediculous. Just look at the Timmy. Equally as good and original IMO. $129

IMO: although the Maxon is a very very nice pedal it can't reproduce the thick syrupy tone a Klon gives you. The Klon can do what the Maxon does if dialed in right and has a buffer which can or can't be a positive.
