vintage style? how much gain can you get without sounding shitty

I don't think you can power it on without sounding shitty

The Valveking can do vintage/retro all the way to the brootz. I've checked out a ton of shitty demos on youtube.

Pretty good value for a hi-gain amp man. Does cleans nicely too.

Two of the better demos here:

worst amp from peavey. in my last band the lead guitarist showed up one day with a brand new one instead of retubing his peavey JSX. Horrid harsh icepick. lots of diodes and SS in the signal path if you look at the schematic, def not an all tube head by any means.their class a simulation is far worse as well.

with 5150s going for $500 i could never recommend the valve king.

it's ok for high gain stuff, great cleans. I would much prefer a used JSX, XXX, 5150, Ultra Plus or something else in that price range personally.

It's a shit box. Sorry.

WORST thing the Iron Maidens ever did. Must be an endorsement cause not eve a blond bobmshell baddass shredder chick and her LA rack, can distract you from her shitty tone...

The other "Murray" chick was playing thru an Engle.... I almost stabbed my earholes that night just to put myself out of my misery...

A while ago, maybe different amps now, but that amp, at volume, was shite....

My local music shop lets me take stuff home for a week to try out and I
think it's the only thing I've ever brought back the same day... YMMV

Bunghole, sorry the Valveking turned out to be a shitbox.

At any rate, I can get a very clean Peavey Ultra Plus shipped to you for $375-400 (it was re-tubed last year & used very little since) . If you don't find what you're looking for shoot me a PM & we can try to work it out.

I've had the Valve King 100 head and the 112 combo both for a short while, emergency situations. While I got by with the sound I got rid of them as fast as I could. There was something in the sound I didn't like at all. I actually preferred the Peavey Windsor head to the VK.

I can't compare the sound to any of the other Peaveys mentioned above, but around here the price range for VK's is about 1/3 or even more lower than say a JSX or a 5150 used.

Double plus 1!

owned one for years, great amp!

I played some gig at a bar where an optional backline was provided for the bands... decided I wouldn't pack my rig to save time, and had to play one of these awful Valve Kings... honestly worst tone experience I've had during a show. It was so bad I was pissed and not enjoying myself the entire night.

The only way to get usable a high gain sound from these is to lower the preamp gain to a subtle AD/DC level of light crunch, and then slam the front end with an OD pedal.
At that point you aren't really utilizing any of the amps gain voicing, just it's power and front end eq.
