When I was 16 and saw KISS Alive I, I didn't really notice gay or straight, it was not talked about in the crowd I drank and toked with. It was all about feeling a tit, learning a lead, and not getting kicked out of school.

I noticed this too - the puckered up bullshit thing going on with "rock" guitar icons... I have NO idea what it is, other than an to attempt to look chiselled and slim, kinda sexy and young, and trying hard not to age...I think.
In the case of Paul Stanley, he's always done this - it's his poofter look. Never got it, never will, and he sucks as a guitarist. So see ya later - their shows were great "shows" but their musical skills, somewhat lacking.
Yngwie IS a poofter. He's gay and there's nothing wrong with that... That cat is one of the baddest most skilled icons and guitar gods that has ever plucked a string for our ears to hear. I think his 'image' has prevented a lot of peeps from getting IN to him. Too bad, because he's incredible IMHO.
Vai? He is skinny. He is getting older. He farms honey bees. He's cosmic in his skillset. He's a god. But something I've noticed a LOT about Vai, he tries to emulate that same facial expression he did on the ambiguous cover of Passion and Warfare. Nevertheless, I think he's awesome.
Now - OUTSIDE of ALL of this poofter talk... I am SO fed up with ANY harder rock, heavier rock, heavy metal, nu-metal band shots where NO ONE smiles, has a smirk, has a bit of character in their facial expression you know?? They all look like they're trying to be bar brawlers with close ties to the HA or something. Get the fuck OVER yourselves. Smile a little, laugh a little, life's too short to be taken seriously, and making music is supposed to be fun - not some mystically granted wizard's chest of swordsmanship and monster lairs to be like the reading of the scripts on Mt. Whatever.
Can't stand the machismo bullshit in most bands, artists, guitarists, and the industry in general. Pointless.

Nuno is incredible as a guitarist. Have heard rumors about him. It really does not matter. YM was on That Metal Show. Didn't seem like someone I would slam a cold one with. Not a bad guy, just very concious of his near-god status. But with all the adoration he gets, probably nearly impossible not to be full of yourself.
On the smiling. I remember some early Metallica pics where they were smiling. Looking back at that now, it seems odd. Don't see that often.

At a bar, talking to drunk/stoned chic, telling me that Hammet was gay. Where do people come up with this stuff. Granted a couple drunks at a bar are a great source of credible information.... As I get older, I find that I can no longer look at 80's videos/media. I can only listen to it.
On another slightly related 80's rant, I can't stand 80's retro cover bands that feel the need to dress up in wigs and the clothes of the day to play the music. HATE IT, HATE IT, HATE IT!!!!! Especially when alot of these guys were doing it for real in the 80's. Cheapens it for me....

I guess where I'm coming from is - attitude should be in the music, not in your clothes or your facial expression... Let the playing do the talking, and in the meantime, enjoy the ride. When I pick up my ax, I ALWAYS smile... If ever I had the opportunity to present myself on a CD cover, I'd be laughing - or it'd be some strange/oblique/abstract art thing... But ya, I play some heavy shit - dark shit - and sometimes, simply good ol' rock and roll - but no matter what I am playing, I'm typically smiling, grinning or laughing at the antics of my bandmates when we get into a groove.
We're all inspired by Zappa in my group of fellow musicians...so laughter for us standard fair. Impromptu commercial jingles, Britney Spears in the middle of a hardcore metal chugga chugga groove, and other fun shit. That's our schtick, and we love it.

It's a model's trick for looking thinner in pictures... take your tongue and pull it upwards and backward to the roof of your mouth, then suck in your cheeks slightly. Makes you look thinner and removes any double-chin-ness that might be going on. Unfortunately for guitar players, it also makes the "Kissy-face."
