-ever since my old rack mount AKAI 8-track bit the dust I have been struggling to find something simple to use with fairly good quality...

-I've tried REAPER-(I'm a puts idiot, and I couldn't get it to work..... I had a hand held H2 that worked good, simple to use,.. but the mic's were it's weakness.... I have a LAMBDA I had some success with, but it doesn't support anything newer than a XP platform,...

-idealing I would like to have a stand alone unit that I could import/export everything to and from my lap top.

-should I get an old XP lap top and just keep that as a recording puta?

-what's everyone else using?

My stuff is out of date, but I use a focuserite saffire 6, because it was USB, and Ableton LIVE 8.2.1 for program. BUT since my computer decided I needed Windows 10 instead of 7 (somehow on it's own), it is ssssslllllloooooooooOOooowww. Now I need a new computer, Interface and program upgrade... so $$hit!

There are some good freebies to be had, but I'm not sure what all they are.... yet.

I use reaper wifh a Line 6 ux-1. Simple, yes..but it works for song ideas to share them. For something I want to record for keeps, I go to a good studio and work with an engineer.

-I guess that's just the way it is, just like my phone, it was the newest, great best best phone available!!!...the flagship !!... 3 month's later I can't even buy a battery for it because its out of date,..

AxeFxII USB into Reaper, and a Mackie Onyx Blackjack for when I want to use plugins. Reaper is badass and cheap, and there are a ton of vids on YT explaining how to use it. Once you get it it's good.

That Mackie is decent for a starter, and it's around $100. For plugins I use some free shit like the TSE and LePou stuff. Also use ReValver 3/4, badass Peavey 6505 sims with the ability to move mics around.

I like the Two Notes WOS III plugin for some cabs, otherwise I'll use Ownhammer stuff.

Can really get a decent recording setup going for less than $200 anymore. Badass time to be a guitarist.

I'm using a Mackie Onyx 1620i interface with Sonar software. I have to say when I started recording myself I knew less than nothing about computers and recording gear and now record, mix, and master myself. If I can do it anyone can.

FWIW - I'm still using Win 7, but my recording computer has never been hooked to the internet so it didn't auto download win 10.

SG Guy, there are some really good tutorials on youtube about using Reaper. Once you learn the basics, it is really easy.

Reaper is easy to use. I was using an L6 UX2 and just recently bought a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 so that I could record drums too. Love it.

UA Apollo 8 -> thunderbolt -> 2012 Mac Mini i7 -> Pro Tools 12.

I've tried a few other DAW's but keep coming back to PT. I find the user interface and workflow much easier to wrap my head around compared to others.

This with Reaper at the moment. I want to switch to Pro Tools and get a copy of Sound Toys to go with it.

Just recorded using Reaper, with an Apollo 18v interface and a few desktop Rupert N. Preamps. Everything else was custom built Mics, unidyne 57, and I think a SM7b. Guitar amps used are a Uberschall and a Heretic, leads on the Heretic with a maxon tb09.

I had the same thing happen last Saturday night on a computer I make a living on, while I was working. Got up for a few minutes and came back to find it in the middle of the 'upgrade'. I was pissed. Earlier in the week I had cancelled the scheduled upgrade appointment and hid the update but it installed anyway. You have 30 days to go back to Windows 7 though, it only took me ten minutes to revert back.

Back on topic, I just finished a song this weekend using Ableton,a Focusrite 2i2 and Focusrite's plugins for the first time and was pretty happy with everything as a whole.

-ohhh no,... Dudes!! My VCR still Blink's 12:00!!!

-I'm doomed!!!

I'm mic'd in front of my Marshall Greenback 4x12 cab using a Shure SM57 with X2u USB Adapter plugged straight into my PC. From there the digital signal gets recorded with Adobe Audition cc.
After I take the raw recorded track and add some post reverb and that's it, done.

I record the video separately and mix the video track with the finished audio track with a program call "NCH software" Video Pad Editor.

I synchronize the two files together and bingo, finished. :)

That really did make me laugh out loud.
Sounds like me and electronics.

Focusrite Saffire Pro24 into an i5 iMac using Logic Pro X...

and a Kemper!

2010 iMac 21.5" with Logic Pro 9
RME Fireface 400 and RME ADI-8 (linked I/O via ADAT)
Soundcraft Delta 24 console
SM57, EV Cobalt CO4 (underrated guitar cab speaker and kick drum speaker!), and/or Heil PR40
Amplifier

Soon, I think my main recording rig will likely be the GP/DI-->RME-->Logic. Depending on how good the cab section is on the GP/DI is, I may use my copy of the Two Notes WoS III for cab and/or power amp modeling ITB.

I'm running a late 2012 Mac mini i7 that is maxed out with dual 1tb SSDs. I run a Focusrite Claret into it via Thunderbolt. I use Presonus Studio One 3 for my DAW.

circa 2004 E-MU 1820m with "breakout box" as my PC interface.

Universal Audio LA-610 MkII tube preamp (based on the 610) which includes an LA-2A style optical compressor.

2x SM57s
1x Beyerdynamic M160

Pro Tools
Adobe Audition
Reaper

...and a buttload of plugins.

Currently, for DAW I prefer Reaper (x64). Adobe Audition does not have any MIDI support, and Pro Fools only allows you to use their .AAX plugin format (which not every plugin manufacturer provides for). There are VST "wrappers" for this conundrum, but so far I haven't had any luck.
