Like the title says. I need a guitar for drop B tuning and don't really know what to look for (never been a low tuning guy, but now I need it). I strung up my ESP MII Custom last night and set it up for Drop B, but it has a floyd and I'd like to get away from the floyd thing.

So, what guitar would you suggest?

My favorite type of guitars for low tunings are typically all mahogany guitars like a Les Paul or an Explorer, but it depends on what kind of tone you want. Some people will tell you that you need real bright woods and pickups but that's totally untrue IMO.

I currently have my Jim Root Tele strung to drop B but i really liked my PRS Custom 22 drop B also. Its gotta be mahogany for sure

mike mushok baritone prs. Schecter baritones are good too. I hate tuning lower than c# with 24.75" scale. Just my .02

I have one Jim Root Tele in Drop B and another in Drop A. They hold the tunings well. Had to file the nut a bit for larger gauge strings.

As for the one asking the question....it isn't worth it with an OFR. The only way it works with any satisfaction is to lock it down with a trem lock or do some Southern engineering on it. It can be done though, but if this is a guitar that you want to retune from drop B back to something else all the time, you will have to always be adjusting spring tension to flatten out the trem. Trust me, a pain in the ass.

My Charvel Socal has ruled in B standard for me. Not exactly drop B but pretty much.

im in drop b on my dean. definitely get a guitar with at least 25.5 inch scale for better tuning stability.

Again, not needed at all if the guitar is setup correctly. Just look at how many bands play short scale guitars in lower tunings.

Just get a bass...the guitar has no business being down there ;)

Hey Steve what gauge strings are you using in both tunings? Im still on the factory string and feel they could be a little bigger, especially when i drop it down to A on those strings.
