Agatha Christie classics latest to be rewritten for modern sensitivities​


Digital versions of new editions seen by The Telegraph include scores of changes to texts written from 1920 to 1976, stripping them of numerous passages containing descriptions, insults or references to ethnicity, particularly for characters Christie’s protagonists encounter outside the UK.

The author’s own narration, often through the inner monologue of Miss Jane Marple or Hercule Poirot, has been altered in many instances. Sections of dialogue uttered by often unsympathetic characters within the mysteries have also been cut.

In the 1937 Poirot novel Death on the Nile, the character of Mrs Allerton complains that a group of children are pestering her, saying that “they come back and stare, and stare, and their eyes are simply disgusting, and so are their noses, and I don’t believe I really like children”.

This has been stripped down in a new edition to state: “They come back and stare, and stare. And I don’t believe I really like children”.

Vocabulary has also been altered, with the term “Oriental” removed. Other descriptions have been altered in some instances, with a black servant, originally described as grinning as he understands the need to stay silent about an incident, described as neither black nor smiling but simply as “nodding”.

Natalie Portman Has ‘Rewritten’ Classic Fairy Tales To Make Them “Gender-Neutral”​

American actress Natalie Portman has rewritten several classic fairy tales to make them “gender-neutral” so “children can “defy gender stereotypes”


Portman felt the ages-old fairytales “did not reflect the world.” And she wanted to have stories to read to her own children that edited away the focus on male characters.

“I found myself changing the pronouns in many of their books because so many of them had overwhelmingly male characters, disproportionate to reality,” the Thor star said. “Boys need to see that women have a multitude of opportunities open to them, to consider what they think and feel, and how they experience the world.”

Portman also scolded those who toss off bromides that women are “fierce” or “confident.”

“Women don’t just need to be badass warriors or fierce and confident. We also need characters who have self-doubt, who make mistakes, because we all mess up, we’re human,” she exclaimed. “So many people say things like ‘Women are stronger and better leaders’ and think they’re making a feminist statement. But it’s limiting for a woman, for anyone, to be put on a pedestal.”

Portman has also been a big activist to defund police departments in the U.S., when she jumped onboard the defund the police movement. In June of last year, she joined a list of celebrities to sign a letter advocating for an end to American law enforcement.

The Star Wars actress also said her own “white privilege” made her fear the phrase “defund the police.”

FBI Rewrite The Rule Book In Favor Of ‘President’ Hillary​

FBI Director James Comey has completely rewritten the rule book in order to keep Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton out of jail.

Despite the overwhelming evidence that Clinton violated Section 793(f) of the federal penal code, acting with gross negligence in removing highly classified information from its proper place and transmitting it to others in an unsecured form – she has been let off the hook in order to pursue her Presidential dreams.

Director Comey even conceded that former Secretary Clinton was “extremely careless” and strongly suggested that her recklessness very likely led to communications (her own and those she corresponded with) being intercepted by foreign intelligence services.

Yet, Director Comey recommended against prosecution of the law violations he clearly found on the ground that there was no intent to harm the United States.

In essence, in order to give Mrs. Clinton a pass, the FBI rewrote the statute, inserting an intent element that Congress did not require. The added intent element, moreover, makes no sense: The point of having a statute that criminalizes gross negligence is to underscore that government officials have a special obligation to safeguard national defense secrets; when they fail to carry out that obligation due to gross negligence, they are guilty of serious wrongdoing.
