When I put my hand over my bridge PU...

...I hear a split second of feedback. This is on my main Gibson SG. I thought maybe it was some wiring going bad, so I re-did the whole thing with an RS Guitarworks kit, but that didn't fix it. I don't have any ground hum, and it's quiet 99% of the time...except for a split second as my picking hand approaches the area above the pickup in between stops. I sing too, and it happens a little bit more frequently when I'm in front of the mic...but still does it occasionally even when I'm standing back from the mic. The next thing I'm gonna change is the PU. It still has the stock 498T in it. It happens when I'm using pedals, and also when I plug straight into the amp. I have an ISP Decimator in-line, and it doesn't really fix the problem, cuz there's still that split second of feedback before the gate kicks in.
My signal path is pretty simple...Gibson SG, Boss TU2, Morley Bad Horsie, ISP Decimator, Bogner Shiva. Any ideas? Thanks guys.

Knowing stock gibson pups, it's probably microphonic or poorly potted.
The only other thing to check is to see if your pickup is too high and close to the strings.
Is this happening when your hand is above the pickup, or when your hand actually makes contact with the strings?

Above the pickup. It's right as my hand is about to touch the strings. Once the side of my palm touches the strings, it's not an issue.

If you like that particular pickup, you might try re-potting it. I think that is a pretty hot pickup, and re-potting a little bit might not help the squeal. But maybe I am thinking about the 500T Gibson pickup....

Personally, I would replace the pickup. There are tons of options that are much higher quality and sound better imho.

I had a 498T pickup in my les paul studio that squealed, I just repotted it. In the mean time I tried a bunch of aftermarket pickups.

And you went back to the 498T?
I have a few PU's laying around that I need to put in this guitar, but haven't the time.
I was just trying to isolate the problem before trying new PU's.
Thanks!

Before I sold the '95 Gibson Les Paul Studio yes. It may have been the right before you pack up the guitar to ship out effect, but the 498T sounded great when I put it back in.

I went through the following:
Dimarzio Super distortion
Rio Grande BBQ
Motor City Afwayu

I was looking for more fullness and low end from the bridge position.

Anyway, I would take out the 498T and repot it and try on you have around in the mean time.

Ok guys, I suck. We had band practice last night and I realized that yes, it's squealing when my hand is against the strings. While I'm picking it goes away...but it starts to squeal right as I'm about to touch the strings and stays that way while I'm touching it, until I am picking notes. I have a buncha other PU's laying around that I need to try, so I'll swap something else in there soon.

Blacba, I've tried similar PU's in the past too!
Started with the 498T, did the BBQ for a couple years, tried the Super Distortion in one of my Les Pauls, but I keep going back to the 498T.
I also have a Motor City Angel Dust ordered that should be here soon for the SG.

Please post if the Angel dust fixes the issue and how you like it.

Here is a link if you want to repot your 498T assuming that is the issue: http://www.guitarnuts.com/technical/ele ... /index.php

I have so many PU's laying around that I could throw in there...but I've been holding off until the the Angel Dust shows up, cuz that's the one I've been dying to hear.
