I need 220uf 350v axial electrolytic caps. I can't find them anywhere in the USA, except for the Ruby Gold caps (which suck). F&T? Can't find any. Halp!

Already checked the usual places: Mouser, Mojo, Tube Depot, AES, etc. Nothing.

Watts tube audio has 220uf 300V caps for you. Watts is awesome to deal with and ships fast. I have bought a ton of stuff from him over the years and they have been all high quality items.

Not if you're putting two in series, which is what most valve amps with 220uf HT caps do.

I'm just replacing what's in the amp like-for-like. There are currently four caps, each 220uf 350v. Looks like each pair is in series. But I didn't want to change anything too much.

300v caps in series gives you an effective voltage rating of 600v. I think you should be good unless the HT voltage is over 600v, which is very rare for guitar amps.

Ok, cool. It's just that I was told you should have a good amount of overhead. And with caps having a +/- 20% tolerance, that could mean a 300v cap is operating at 240v on a really bad day, which means 480v for a pair. Amp is running mid-to-high 400s. And with a possible 10% swing in mains (I have horrible power in my building)... that's cutting it close, no?

Or does the voltage rating not change with value tolerance, only capacitance?

Rule of thumb for choosing capacitor in HV supply ripple filtering is very simple: nominal rectified peak voltage (not ripple averaged DC) + 20%.
That's because mains voltage can vary +/-10% and you don't want to run your caps continuously at their max rated voltage when mains happens to go +10% .
Capacitor life time is is specified when operated continuously at max rated voltage, ripple current and temperature (or otherwise specified).
Lowering all or any of these three parameters extends life time a couple of orders of magnitude.

Tolerance on caps relates to the capacitance value, not the voltage rating. With your amp's B+ under 500vdc you'll be fine with two 300v rated caps in series. The F&T caps linked above are excellent quality. I've used hundreds of F&T caps with zero issues.

Awesome, thanks. :)

Yeah, I use F&T in my other amps and just replaced some bias supply caps in my current amp with F&T. The amp has Ruby Gold in there stock. But I guess this batch of Ruby caps had some failure issues. Just now getting around to changing out the power supply caps and didn't want to use Ruby Golds again.

ebay is a good place to go alot of amp parts are thare

Weber sells caps. Don't know if they have what you're looking for.
