I think I want the warpig ...but heard a demo of the nailbomb sounded really good...so which one and which magnet? playing mostly in c# and d...thx

What amp and what guitar?

If you want something like what EMG offers in the active-brootz, than it's Miracle Mans. If you wants something more organic and if your amp digs lower output pups (RELATIVELY speaking!!), maybe the Painkiller or Nailbomb.

Peace
Mojo

yeah I ve got emgs in 3 guitars now...going in a custom guitar im building lp style..set neck...redwood top, honduras body.. wanting to go passive on this one
amps -5150,5153,jvm,avenger

If you're used to the dynamics and feel of EMGs, and you like how they sound but wanna go passive, then try out the MMs. They're BKPs passive pup solution to those not wanting EMGs. I've got 'em in my ESP FR-II, and they're incredibly potent. CRAZY output.

Painkiller
Miracle Man
Warpig
Nailbomb
Rebel Yell
Cold Sweat
Aftermath

Any of these will work for what modern metal (in no particular order). It really depends on what kind of sound you want, and what materials your guitar is constructed of. Even some of the lower output pickups can pull off modern metal, especially if you use a high gain amp.

I enjoy playing metal even with low output PAF type pups.

Which BKP have the most 'refined' and detailed midrange response ? To make an analogy, the Painkillers (judging from clips) sound like a big shards of broken glass type of grain structure. I'm after a more finely crushed sands of glass type of gain structure (more delicate, refined).

Does that make sense ? Ventura, help me out !

If that's the case, perhaps the black dog set would work out for you. Kind of a more modern/higher output take on a PAF style.

Have you checked out their site? Great descriptions/soundclips/etc.

Yes I've checked the site of course. Just looking for people who have personally tried them. Black Dog set seems like a good suggestion, thanks.

The Painkillers took a while for me to understand them. But now? Ya man, they are serious business. They are different sounding creatures in the world of heavy pups. They're awesome once you've got your amp dialed in to take them properly - but they really are exquisite pups.

Sooooooooooooooo, as far as midrange beauty, hands down the Black Dogs. I've got these loaded into a '68 LPC and it's immediately noticeable when I swap axes to this BD loaded axe. It's got cut, bite, growl and a really nice open sound to the bridge; a big, warm and percussive (not too bassy) tone in the neck. Great, great pups. I think people steer clear of these thinking they have to be in a LZ cover band to warrant owning them - so not true   They're really great pups, touch of vintage vibe to them, then a whole new world in the opposite direction.

Hope this helps.

BUT!!!! I gotsta say, as per the TITLE of your thread... "MODERN METAL", this makes me think of a Periphery, Tesseract, Meshuggah style sound - this style of guitar playing requires tight tracking pups, immediate response, tight bass, etc. Painkillers do this hands down. That's their job. Just saying.

+1

I had a set of the Black Dogs. They are one of my favorite BK pickups. They are a hot vintage style pickup with a more pronounced mid-range. I would have kept them if I didn't tune to C# and lower. The are pretty awesome, and not over the top with the treble or mid-range. Really bad-ass pickups.

Right now I am using the Painkiller, and the Rebel Yell. The work well for lower tunings and I get a tight low end from both of these. I agree with the statement some where above stating that you have to dial in the Painkillers. Once you got them dialed, the are very punishing.

Moreso than the Emeralds ?
The emeralds are a touch brighter - top endy - than the BDs. The BDs claim to fame is their mids. I've got the emeralds in a 3 pup config on a '57 LPC which is a mahog on mahog construction body. I bought the emeralds to give it a touch more sizzle in the higher end, and they do just that. They're also a really neat pup for Tool/Adam Jones'esque harmonics and textures. Maybe that's a combination of things - guitar, style of playing, amp, etc. but they're a unique pickup for sure. I'd say less suited to the all-out rip of modern metal, more a vintage based pup with a higher output that likes all the business in between - and when I say that - I mean the feelings and complexities that exist outside the usual spectrum of guitar tones. I love 'em.

Yep. Put it this way, my tech does a ton of work on my guitars, and always does my pup swaps for me... When he installed the BDs in my '68 LPC, he just said "holy shit those are some outstanding pups man - over the top - I mean - wow!!". Take it for what it is - they really juice a guitar up.

Modern metal whilst remaining organic (tight, without the UBER tightness of the Aftermaths) = Ceramic Nailbomb. I think it's the best pickup for metal that BKP make. Aftermath a close second. Never got on with the Painkiller.

thx guys now im totally confused...anybody like the warpig?

you can e-mail customer support, let them know what sound you are looking for and they can suggest the best pick up for you. That is what I did, and my nail bombs are in transit.

Ceramic Warpig is the first BKP I've actually liked.

My ESP M-1 wears it well.

I'm playing it in the video below...

just a quick question while we're on the subject (since i've been searching for a few sets of BK pickups to put in a few guitars); which of their humbuckers are active, and which are passive?
