I'm possibly getting into a group that will be playing at least half modern country (Eric Church, Jake Owen, Brantley Gilbert) and I'm thinking a compressor would be a good thing for the clean sounds. So what would ya'll recommend? Not trying to break the bank, just want something that will get the job done and NOT COLOR THE TONE WHEN OFF. Boss maybe?
Rig will probably be Marshall DSL15 > Boogie compact 1x12 w/ MC90.

While I don't play much country, the compressor that is on my board right now is the Bearfoot Pale Green Compressor. NO TONAL COLORATION, NO NOISE, just amazing :D

I have tried others and this is the quietest, cleanest that I have ever owned. I still have my Tone Press (nice blending option) and Sexdrive (which is also very cool) and might even have the Boss around somewhere. The PGC adds, in a good way. It's like I don't want to turn it off because there is something warm and wonderful about it.

As always just my opinion and YMMV, but I would give it a try

i'm seriously considering the Wampler Ego, it's the industry standard for country guys at the moment.

I use the MXR Dyna Comp .... but I think it might color the sound a bit.

I like my Keeley. It's top drawer all the way. Seriously top drawer.

I also get a kick out of my EHX Soul Preacher... it does color things up and has a flare to it, but it's a good vibe. Nothing like the Keeley, but a great pedal as its idiosyncrasies work for me. It's quirky and I like its quirks.

Keeley is studio grade.

2 cents.

Agreed Mo.

I have a Keeley as well, not the 4 knob, the 2 knob. Great comp have enjoyed it for some time and it was the one on my board before the Bearfoot PGC. Totally forgot it in my previous post

Wow that was quick. Thanks for the info guys.
Any other suggestions?

For my taste I like the Boogie better than Marshall for country.

What he said!!! :D

Had or played several extensively (Boss, Keeley, Dyna, modded Dyna to Ross specs) and the best all around for me is the MXR custom comp. CA3080 chip, solid build, sounds AMAZING! Seriously outperforms everything I had before.

ehh..I wouldn't go that far. It's a great compressor, no doubt, but I wouldn't place it up there with a Urei. The best *studio-grade* compressor I've seen for a pedalboard is the Origin Effects SlideRIG.

For its size, price and what it can do - it's up there.

But sure, not rack size 120V $5000 machinery.

But damn good for what it is.

I own a Barber Tone Press and Wampler Ego Comp.

The Ego Comp is a little better with a wider range of control, more ability to shape the sound. Just by a little. The EC seems better as a crossover for country chicken pickin or rock. The Tone Press is very good, no slag on that one at all. Can't go wrong with either.

Tried a Keeley. It has the trademark country tone. If you want that tone, I would go Keeley.

For the most versatile, to my ears, and that is a personal taste thing, the Wampler goes into metal better but can be traditional country almost as we'll as the Keeley.

Either are great. Will be a matter of personal flavor preference.

I use a Dr Z Maz 38 for that sort of music, and the amp itself has a big effect, obviously. Brad Paisley put Dr Z on the world stage and a tele, comp, Z will give you that tone. Now the playing ability? Seriously, good luck with that.

What's the consensus on the Boss CS3? I have one buried in the "toybox" that I got back in the 80's for it's sustain abilities but have been thinking about adding it to my board for clean tones. Obviously I'll give it a go and hear for myself, but I'm curious as to what others who have used it for cleans think about it.
