Seriously! Just don't unplug the effects and play the amp or you'll notice the tone suckage right away and go crazy.

I know what you're saying and was planning to do just that. I think my biggest problem might be getting the return level set correctly because there is no easy way to a/b the level on the return and the level with nothing in the loop. I think this level is critical to the tone... if I hit the pi too hot, or too cold, it just doesn't do it for me. That's what I'm thinking, anyway, I might be totally wrong.
The thing that's killing me is that I'm not really a tone snob. I can make do with pretty much anything.... but this is driving me nuts. It either gets buzzy/chainsaw like extra distortion -- that's when I think I'm probably letting the return signal get too hot. Or, I lose dynamics.... and that could be from the level or just the unit a/d-d/a itself.
I'm going to try the Suhr Minimax and see if that is the answer.
