As of late i hated Marshall amps, probably because i bought a JCM 900 in the early 90's and it was
not what i was looking for, after that Mesa came out with the Dual Rectifier which i fell in love with.So now that i'm getting older my ears have changed,as i'm sure some of yours have to.For the past 3 or 4 months i've been hearing Fortin modded Marshalls, which are killer.
I just bought a Metro Plexi 100,this is pretty much sight unseen, who does the best Jose mod, besides
Jose? Now that he's no longer with us.I'm doing this without really hearing the amp so i'm turning
to all of you for the best advice, this has been on my mind, day and night for over a month and i'm going crazy,i dont want to end up with an amp that sits in my closet.
I love my Uberschall and DR's and Diezels, but theres something missing and i think this is what it is.I'm not really a tone chaser anymore.these days i play several hours a day without turning knobs and picking my nose.
So who does it the best(Jose Mod)?

Thanks in advance.

Fortin Cali Mod  It will do everything from old school Marshall tones, to Jose mod style tones and much more!

Yeah I am a fanboi of Mike's and want to mow his lawn for him..................................Fortin Cali mod

I like the sounds of Voodoo as well and Trace is a class act.

Cameron doesn't do mods anymore, for some reason.and i talked to Dave Bray and Mike Fortin,so it looks like it's going to be one of those cats,Fortin does his Cali mod and Bray who is super nice does a Mod I Plus. From what i understand, the real Jose mod wasn't that great, not sure if that meant to todays standards,or what? Guess it was hit or miss,James Hetfield wrote (Fade To Black) about the bands gear getting stolen, which was his first Jose modded Marshall which sounded great and his other Marshall wasn't as awsome sounding.I don't wanna step on anybodys toes or dog him out.
It's just what i heard.

BTW nice gay video link,Al Pacino doing that shuffle in Scarface is awsome.

FYI, Bray's mod sounds nothing like a Jose mod to me. It has more of a super fat, looser thing going on. Its very cool, but the Jose stuff sounds nothing like it.

Ralph (Gainfreak) can chime in about this as he had a Bray modded 72 Marshall. He currently has a 50watt Cali Mod on loan from Mike Fortin, and since spending time with it.. he has now sent the Bray modded 72 to Mike Fortin so it can be gutted/converted to the Cali Mod

Thanks for the heads up,i was leaning towards the Fortin mod, since hes only a few hours away
from me,but his lead time is like 10 weeks, thats the only draw back.

I dig that tone, and Voodoo was my first thought when i was thinking about doing this,BUT!My buddy had them mod a Soldano and it made a horrible buzzing sound, not all the time, but every now and then it would pop and buzz,i kinda think they became kind of big and with big comes sloppy and lazy,i could be wrong IMO.On the other hand i've heard alot of good stuff from them to.
Seem to be the mod of choice.

Although I've never heard any of these mods in person. I still love my DSL Mike Fortin helped me mod. Both at home and in a band setting. I would highly recomend him. The other person I would consider after him would be Dave Friedman. Would not go with Voodoo as I think there work isn't as nice as others from what I've seen IMO.

Yikes, the presence is up high, the bass is super low, mids up high, trebe low and it sound woofy. I don't care for the clip. :aww:
thats the real downfall from the clips.
It might not even be dialed in on how the listener likes it and it could mis-represent on what it really sounds like in person.
I know my clips sound crappy and never capture what it "Feels" and sounds like when in front of it.
I have bought so many amps just from clips. Knowing I was taking a gamble. But for the best part of it, if the amp isnt your cup of tea, it usually holds re-sale value pretty good. I never really took a beating when flipping amps.
Better than a Savings bond for investment purposes!!

The way i determine how clips sound is how the open E string sounds, like E string be mashed, like old thrash, pounding the E string, down strokes,if it sounds floppy you can hear it,or if its loose in any way, other then that im cool with,i know most of my tone comes from both my hands.I need tight mids and lows, smooth gain.
