yes yes yes we all know it can play stoner sludge doom metal till the cows come home, but what else can it do?

massive headroom? in your face cleans? can it play higain maybe with an OD/boost and noise gate? no? yes? maybe?

is there really just no info on them outside stoner metal because, well, thats all they can really do?

thanks

I've had 2 MVUs. I now have 1 MVU and 1VU(KT88 180 watt).

Yes they do cleans very well but I think most people buy them for their anger and growl. Being a single channel amp you have to choose whether you want dirt or clean or to throw a pedal in front of it. I like the fuzz of the amp itself so much that I choose to run mine for it's angry dirt tones and I run a Verellen Model T clone for my cleans using a Radial Twin City to switch between the two.

The MVU is not a super tightly focused amp like a VHT or Mesa. It is a looser sounding amp and I think that is a major reason it is so treasured by some players.

This demo was recorded using my MVU. I think it's metal but not sludge or doom. You be the judge.

Oh, and I heard recently about some country player ordering a VU. I'm not sure who it is.

sounds pretty cool, still relatively loose and fuzzy, but thats expected. I guess i'm more curious about this amp's cleans than its higain, as its pretty doubtful i'd ditch my 5150. The point is im in a few different bands that span genres and always been a huge fan of orange/matamp/green/electric/etc. I mean who wouldnt want one of these? Of course my hiwatt is extremely clean and takes pedals amazingly, but the clean just isn't what i hear in my head. I want something really punchy for a clean, really powerful and loud. The hiwatt is super loud, but it just doesn't feel right. Hard to explain, i know, but yea. Thanks!

I think I do know what you mean about the Hiwatt. What model is yours? I used to have a Lead100. Great amp for aggressive rock but narrow in tone if you ask me.

Have you investigated the KT88 Sunn models? Their cleans are great and round sounding to me. My Spectrum II has really warm, full cleans, not unlike a Fender but it feels different, more punchy. Maybe that's due to the KT88 setup. That's a 50 watt amp though and breaks up around noon so I'd go for the 100 watters if you look into them.

Or you could always seek out an old Ampeg V4...

You can totally tell the difference in voicing between your 5150 and my Electric can't you. The Electric is much looser. I prefer that with my style of writing though. My other guitar player plays a Dual Rec. The two amps compliment each other for that reason. His style is right for the Mesa.

I own an Electric MVU (hey guys, BlackHive from H-C, here). The VU and PU amps seem more geared toward cleans. The MVU amps CAN do clean but break up super early. The gain/"Fuzz" knob basically has to be 100% counterclockwise and is even then starting to break up if the Deep knob isn't also set to the most counterclockwise setting (most low-end is cut out). You can roll back on the guitar volume or use lower output pickups to help but the amp is really built for its growly distortion.

Don't ditch your 5150 if you need a tighter, higher gain amp for metal. With a boost, overdrive, or distortion pedal in front of my MVU, I can pull off thrash metal with mine but it's not the BEST amp for that. It does get a ridiculous amount of gain for its design, though. The 5150 will have more gain available and have a tighter response than an Electric MVU. Running those two amps together at the same time would probably sound like Armageddon, though. The Electric strikes me as an amp that's pigeonholed unnecessarily. IMO it pulls off amazing tones for punk, hardcore, and metal. It's easily the angriest sounding amp I've ever played or heard. It just works for any type of aggressive music I've ever used it for.

My Electric MVU has been the best equipment purchase I've ever made. I have never been so happy with anything else. I will N-E-V-E-R sell it. I regretted selling my old Matamp until I picked the Electric up. It blows it away in every sense. I personally feel they're worth the cost and build time. Many wouldn't feel the same, I know.

where does a man get an Electric Amp these days? I've been searching all over :(

is it just me, or did that youtube link sound like a wet fart from a dead/decaying calf in the middle of a hail storm :scared:

I hope its just you, i wouldn't want to think my taste in tone is THAT fucked up!

tone is tone - it would not matter my opinion, as its not my place to say what you like and dislike at all.

but that is what i thought i heard. its why tone chasing is so unique

I had a volume unit here a couple days ago and it was actually a fairly versatile amp as long as you like loud as fuck and huge. I honestly thought it would be more of a one trick pony but it could do a fair range of cleans and plenty of dirt but all with it's own rather unique voice.

Ya, i guess one mans holy grail tone is anothers dead calf wet fart, lol

I get why you like the sound in that video. It's a textural thing. I do often like a guitar sound to be on the raggedy edge of falling apart. It's just that I often hear the Green's etc. driven past that point by most people where they sound like something's broken. You could never get a modern high gain amp to sound like the amp in that video. Whether you could get an Electric to sound like a modern high gain amp would take some serious pedal hunting.

It's very much a textural thing. And also a CONtextual thing. I don't picture myself playing van halen riffs with the green :P BUT, I don't think there is a better amp/tone for slow doomy riffs and thats what I lean towards nowadays. I have a rockerverb 100 on its way and i'm hoping i can get as close to that deadcowwetfart tone as possible ;), while still being able to do a nice chunky slow thrash tone as well. Sorry if i derailed the thread a bit!

Sig'd. Hahahaaaa. I believe that clip is just an example of how far you can go with this amp. It isn't an example of all these amps are.

No problem! Good info in here, enough for me, anyways. As for your rockerverb, i've spent ALOT of time with that amp. It's a great amp, but you're really going to need a muff or a fuzz to loosen it up as much as a green. I know the newer oranges are more "vintage" voiced than most amps on the market, but they still are very modern amps. The dirt channel is relatively tight.

That's pretty much it unless you know someone with one for sale. There are only about 100 out in the world right now.
Yeah, but isn't the wait time like 1 year or something?

I really like Matamps, but I'm so curious about Electrics

Yeah. Since Electrics are built by just one guy in Florida who also has other projects he's working on (like his own line of awesome sounding amps: Diabolical Amplification), he's pretty backed up.
