I think its just a regular Avenger Carl....it has the newer style grill on the front. The first ones had a cast aluminum faceplate but Mike changed it to try to keep costs down.

I thought the Hot Rod Avengers were simply Avengers with an FX loop

BTW Carl...I remember when that Angel record came out....that cover was a trip!! :D

Avengers and Hot Rods don't sound the same from what I've heard from people. But I've never tried one.

That's what I heard too. Hot Rod refers to the added loop.

You and I (and somewhat Carl too) grew up as teenagers with the same music.. . My first concert after we moved to VT when I was 16 was ANGEL opening for RUSH and then BLUE OYSTER CULT. . Quite a good one.... Sold out, big show in Plattsburgh Fieldhouse... Now years later Blue Oyster Cult plays bars around here , some that I've even played at with cover bands.. BOOOOOOOOOO

Angel...ooops,
I thought that was Neil Shon in his Santana days

hey Eric!!
Angel was a ripping band. IMO they should have went further. Punky Meadows got some cool Strat tones, They had great tunes too.
I might grab the first 3 cds. I havent heard that stuff in a long time.

Remember Ramatam?

Nope , you put that one past me . Mitch Mitchell was the drummer right? Never heard them though and I'm surprised I didn 't! .... . I do however remember listening to "Talking about a Feeling" by Mahogany Rush thru my deluxe NUMARK HEadphones and being the only drugfree kid on the block tripping to that... ha....

A little before your time :D was about 72-73
Mitch was the drummer and the band featured the late April Lawton. Mike Pinera on vocals and guitar as well.

I was 12 then and believe it or not was listening to Sabbath , Nazareth , Uriah Heep , Zeppelin etc as well as Hendrix!

OK , this was as slight flashback diversion from the Soldano HR Avenger thread huh... . Gotta go now. .

I had a Hot Rod Avenger 50W (no loop) number #19 actually. The 50W version seemed a bit more aggressive sounding compared to the 100W version I had tried. Maybe cause the power section was being pushed harder. Mercury Mags were the trannies in mine as well.

I got such a good deal on a custom '95 SLO (pics to follow in a few days)that I got rid of it. I do miss it somewhat as the raw hard nature of it with the MM trannies and no loop just made it sound beautiful in a "want to rip your face off and stomp on it" kind of way. It was not as smooth as the SLO is, but real nice.

Hey I finally found these e-mails I got from Mike Soldano. A while back I damn near bought one of the Avengers but bought the 5153.

Hi Jim, Yes, there is a version of the Avenger available with an effects loop. It is called the "Hot Rod" Avenger, and the retail price difference between it and the standard Avenger is $100.00. It is available in 50 or 100 watts. The Avengers now have front grilles that allow the tubes to be seen. Attached is a picture so that you can see what they look like. I hope this helps! Here is another response I got from Mike when asked about the tone difference between the SLO and Avenger...

Hi Jim, No, the Avenger has the same gain as the SLO, but because of the different output transformer in the power amp, it does sound a bit more compressed at lower volumes. This might be what your friend was hearing. To be even more manageable at lower volumes, I'd recommend the 50 watt Avenger rather than the 100. I hope this helps!
