I'm thinking about taking advantage of Weber's buy one, get one half-off sale, and I'm considering mixing two Legacy speakers-one with 75Hz cone and one 55Hz for more low end. Has anyone done this with the Legacies or Scumbacks? Am I better off getting two of the same or maybe same cones, but one with a large dust cap?

I haven't tried it with Webers or Scumbacks, but I've done it with Celestion H30 Heritage 55hz and Celestion H30 70th Anniversary 75hz. I thought it sounded great. Very fat with a big low-end. The upper-mids and highs blended nicely.

But Herbert rulz!!! :)

I have a pair of M75s in a 2x12 and a new M55 in the box that I plan to try out in place of one of them...if I ever get around to actually doing it I'll let you know the results.

Cool. I think I'm going to give it a go!

I'm mixing the Weber and/or Scumbacks in 55 and 75, but i'm mixing by full cabs.

Usually i put the bassier speakers in the bottom cab, but i put a cab that has 2 Legacy 55's and 2 Scumback 55's on top of a 75 cab and liked it so much i never worried about putting them on the bottom.

So yea, the 55 cones are great. I kind of like to match magnet size, so same size magnet on the 55's as on the 75's if possible.

Nice! So, I've heard that smaller magnets are recommended for closed back cabs and larger ones for open-back? I don't know much about how magnet size affects feel or tone, so I was going to just shoot for the middle and get two speakers with 40 oz magnets. Sound like a good idea?

I didn't like the bigger magnet of the old Scumback H75 compared to a M75, but liked the the H55.

Bigger magnets can cause some high end harshness. 40 might be allright? For sure wouldn't be scared of the 40 with the 55cone.

WAIT

magnet size affects tone....? ok...i'll indulge...explain

also, explain to me the Hz aspect/ratio and how it affects tone etc. i always see it referred to, but dont have a working knowledge of it.

anyone? in laymans terms so i dont have to google for 3 hours!

Kind of off topic......but I have both the 30oz and 40oz Legacies (both 65 watt/75hz). They are quite a bit different and I prefer the 30oz by a good margin. They are beefier/thicker in the mids and smoother on the high treble. I have a 30oz/40oz paired in a Splawn 2x12 and also a pair of 30oz in an X pattern with old G12T-75's. That 4x12 mix may sound strange, but I swear it is the best sounding cab I have ever heard. Everyone wants to play through it...lol.

I also had a 4x12 full of the 30 watt/30oz Legacies and they sound nothing like the 65 watt/30oz. The 65 watters are the superior speaker IMO. Matter of fact, if I could only choose one speaker it would be the 65 watt/30oz/75hz/British dustcap. As a reference, I used the old Scumback H75 and J75 and wasn't impressed at all.......never tried the M75 though.

The voicing of your amp plays a huge part in this discussion.

Thanks for all the feedback! Glip-I agree about amp voicings. I'm not sure how the Mark IV will behave with Legacies but I've heard great Mark tones with GB type speakers, so I have high hopes! Basically looking for something that will sound much different than my V30s and for the sale price, the Legacies seem like the way to go.

Eyes-I might just go with 30 oz mags after reading your post. I definitely don't want any high-end harshness. Thanks guys!

Im running m55/m75 xpatt 100W'ers. Their stuffed in a traditional sized 412 slant. The cab is pretty full sounding.

I find this to be the case with my speaker combo also. My cab is matched up with a twinJet w/kt88's. I have no issue with glassy highs at all.

...not sure if I should do the 75/55 mix now, or just go for two 75 hz with 30 oz magnets.

So, what did you end up getting and what were the results?

I ended up going with two of the Weber Legacies, 65Watt, 35oz mags, 75hz. After a long decision I decided I'd wait on the freq mix and just go with two 75s.

Here's a brief review I posted up shortly after installing them in my horizontal Recto 212. These speakers are amazing!!! Seriously in love with them and they are a perfect match for my Mark IVB. Sounded killer with my buddy's 800 too!
