I've never played an EVH - But owned a So-Cal, and San Dimas. The So-Cal, I returned. It was pre-2016, (2015 MIM) take the neck off to adjust the truss-rod, (which I really didn't realize!), was a deal-breaker, the 3-way switch felt cheap, but I know that's all changed. I had a 2016 San Dimas Hardtail, and absolutely loved it.

How's the EVH Specials compare?? I'm looking at possibly a Stealth, or the new 2018 with ebony board, (candy apple red or ivory).

My only reservations on the EVH's are the pickups. I dig the So-Cal's Duncan Distortions! Or, I may look at the San Dimas again.

Taking the neck off is a deal breaker ? All Charvel Strat heads from back in the day are that way... I agree it’s a PITA, but that’s how it always was. Only the pointys had it on the headstock, now the MIM Strat heads have the wheel adjust.

Yeah, I hated it. Especially when I first got it, and dialing it in meant taking it off/back on multiple times to get it right. I'm aware they added the thumb wheel, hence the fact I bought another in 2016.

I never owned any Charvels back in the day, other than a couple with the pointy headstock. I believe the last one I had actually came with Jackson active pickups. It was a damn nice guitar! That would have been around '89/'90. 750XL, I believe it was. Magenta, (I remember the color). I had another that was flamed maple/sunburst that someone put EMG's in. Also nice! That was later, about 1995.

the pickups sound good, but aren't my thing. they have this hot rodded PAF type tone to me. all of my EVH brand guitars have Duncan distortion/'59 combos as a result. the good thing about the evh pickups is that you can usually sell them for decent money and recoup most of the expenses of a pickup swap

someone remind me of the body of the Peavey WG Specials...weren't they basswood??

there's a purple one (local) up for sale... $500...looks to be in good condition. i was just looking at it last night when this thread was bumped...

I fixed those issues by replacing the pups with Wolfetones (which he made specially for me to fit the pup cavities in a Wolf), relocated the toggle switch to the useless tone knob hole, installed an EBMM toggle with no bouncy spring and then a kill switch where the stock toggle switch had been. Works like a charm.

I have this one in my AMS cart, so close to heading to checkout!

I can’t compare, but I can say my Stealth Special is a great axe. The pickups are amazing- previously I was ditching all my pickups for BKs. EVH pu are versatile & inspiring. It’s my #1 for live & frequently used in recording

Do it

The bodies are basswood, and purple like this ? 500 is a good price, or used to be anyways. I had my purple one for sale for 575 shipped and it didn’t even generate interest

500 is great, and if it is 500 shipped that's a damn steal. the wolfie in the picture is American made, it just looks like someone added the tone knob to it.

the Korean models all had a transparent finish with a quilt top veneer, and a shitty Floyd rose knock off. well, I guess they weren't shitty, just not anywhere near as good as the ones on the American models
