It seems like every guitarist I know including myself is always chasing that coveted tone!!! It is like a dog chasing it's tail!!! Will we ever be satisfied? Probably not!!! Let the quest continue until it drives us mad or renders us broke!!!

Was chasing for years...
But realized I am a modded Mesa guy.........Grabbed my tail....and am happy! :D

Waiting for my Friedman modded Plexi to come back home.

Just PM'ed Brad about an Atomica. haha.

It's easier than taking lessons. But I still take them once Ina while.

Weird thing though. After learning a bit more, now I am getting better gear.

But I will say, I have come to believe a good 50% of the mojo is in the fingers. I can play my Epi LP or LTD KH200 guitar into the DSL and it sounds 90% like the Anderson or JP6 thru the 5153. As a matter of facts, I don't need better or more gear, I need to continue learning to play better and do more with the gear I have.

But chasing tone is fine. Safer than drugs and affairs, much cheaper. New amps or gear is inspiring as well. I was messing with a wet dry setup today slaving a 5153 into a DSL. Killer tone.

Felt inspired and started figuring out an old KISS song, God of Thunder. Then dusted off Sanitarium. Forgot a lot of that one... Work to be done there.

This shits fun. That's it.

I must not have anything better to do with my hard earned cash.

Me too....just a straight up Mesa guy though with a bit of modded Marshall for good flavor. It was a great $50,000 ride!

The tones that I've heard on albums are what brought me to the instrument in the first place, so I'm always trying to get to those sounds and ways of playing. Sometimes I feel like I'm there, and sometimes not.

You can't buy piece of mind though, right?

But really man, after the first quarter of next year, and we get our bonuses... You need to go on another gear purge.

Maybe nobody will buy that beater LP you have for sale since it has some character bumps.

ocd is the cause of most of it I think. Really though if I didn't have down time at work I wouldn't think about it. I have had more than adequate gear for most of my playing career. Having said that I think the longer I play the more I learn about tone and what I want\need out of my equipment and it evolves. I have had a few items for years that I know are permanent and each year I find a few more that are on that list. Hopefully someday I will just be happy with what I have (and I do love my stuff) but it's my nature to always wonder about other gear.

I agree!!! I have been through a few different rigs. etc, but probably nothing like most people. Yeah OCD is part of it!!! I hope the Cameron Atomica and the CCV will be enough for now. I do have a 1960s Silver Face Twin combo for cleans, but who gives a shit about cleans!!!

You hit upon the answer-- Budget. "A" coveted tone is a singularity. MANY coveted tones are another potential stratosphere of budgetary constraints

For me there was always just something about an amp or guitar or whatever that just slightly bugged me enough to where I felt There was a better option out there. That or else just getting bored of something after a little while. Never been a huge flipper an have always been on a modest budget for the most part

I agree!!!! Most people have some budget constraints!!! If I was married I wouldn't, but I probably would not be where I am at without my lovely wife!!!! It is all relevant since I have heard great players play through normal gear and they sounded awesome!!!!

I do not think most guitar players are much into gear. Only a small percentage....
From people I have talked with and watching what people use at gigs most are not. Just about zero of the musicians I know are familiar with the amps & other gear many of us are here on these forums.......
