why do 80s heroes forget how to solo

back when we were trying to make 5 mistakes instead of 10 per song VH and YJM and Lynch were sprinting across stadium stages playing things we could only dream of flawlessly from start to finish. Every song had it's own signature identity.

What happened to these guys ?? shouldn't they be 10-20 years better than a pete thorn or a chubtone or an andy wood? not even close.

I look at jeff beck and he may not be sweep picking math rock but at least he still has a unique vocabulary and takes risks.

I just listened to previews of yngwies new cd on iTunes and it was like a bad dream from 89.
vh wrote songs and played solos in 78 that still get my blood racing but nothing good since 5150 in 86, except maybe those two Roth songs. That pentathlon thing he does in hot for teacher is like on every solo and getting lamer each time.

they don't play from the heart anymore they just crank out a predictable autopilot product and seem to be taking advantage of fan loyalty

wouldn't surprise me....but it's like he doesn't even TRY to sound good...you could tell back in the day there was a method to what he was doing..he knew what he wanted to do and he did it....now it's just a whimsical 'well, i'll put my fingers wherever and see what happens'...ick

In Eddie's case, it's clearly alcohol. But there is evidence in these vids that as the hair got shorter the playing suffered. Maybe that's the key.

Hold on a sec. I saw Yngwie a few years ago and he was on FIRE. He had a period where he was getting fat and drinking but he lost weight, probably cut down on drinking, and he was really tearing it up live.

Paul Gilbert? He's never lost anything and if anything his tone is a lot better than it ever was.


Lynch and Eric Johnson are 2 guys though that i agree with that are just not the same. I'm sure getting older does have something to do with it.

I Think that its a combination of a bunch of things. many of which you touched upon already. things change, people evolve etc and as a result, players heads are in different places. EVH claims to have mounds of new material but Im not entirely sure that I want to hear it though there were some moments of his former self in some of those rehearsal vids for the DLR reunion. Frank Marino,Eric Johnson,Schenker,Schon,Trower are all up there in age and still belting it out in both chops and creativity. YJM still has all his chops but is definitely reissuing the same album over and over again, the same with Zakk.

Im not going to rag on these guys because not only have they made their mark on all of us but I dont envy the creative process. In my 20 or so years of playing, Ive come up with maybe 10 works in progress and that might be stretching it LOL!!!


For me, EVH is a special case. The man made me want to learn how to play and to see him slide from his former glory to what he is today is sad and disappointing. The fire and creativity that he exhibited back in the day is nowhere to be found and its a shame to think that its a result of substance abuse. I think that he is own worst enemy and I keep holding on to the hope that he will prove me wrong..

Wow Havent listened to Mr Big much before but I really like Paul Gilberts tone. Im going to have to check out that album.

I tend to agree, they just don't have the desire to play like they once did.

I'm sure if the desire to play like the past was rekindled they could pull it off or at least get closer than they currently do.

Here's my take on it...

Of the players mentioned, and there are still some yet to be mentioned, they were for the most part - in my opinion - pioneers of their era. These cats came along, and blew whatever else was going on 'at that time' completely out of the water with their new approach, talent, flair, abilities, etc. They were gifted, for that time period, and their craft happened to overlap during a time period in which their peers and listeners were craving something new and exciting. Some of these players (most?) simply rested on this skillset and pumped out the CD's and the records and the tunes as much as the paying public could absorb at the time...but preferences shift. The tides turn, music morphs, and playing as well as audience' tastes evolve.

The true artisans that IMHO know how to truly play are, to this day, still doing amazing things with their ax's. Vai, Gilbert, Dweezil, those are a couple that come to mind that are continuing to 'do' their own thing but also 'grow' with the times and the styles. Pioneers are era specific - they're also coined "legendary" in many cases. The ones still macking it are, well, still macking it - and the funny thing is they'll continue to make incredible music and the only thing that will catapult them into "legendary" status is if they die unexpectedly. The pioneers that continue to blow our socks off today are few and far between, but they're out there - it just seems most of us rely on the dead ones or the "have beens" to gauge our musical thermometer today.

i purposely left a few names off of the list for a reason

nuno impressed me at that NAMM reunion a few years ago. still has chops, but cocky guys like that get buried in yes men and pretty soon they start thinking their armpit farts are worthy of tracking.

i haven't heard the blackmore's knights but i cannot imagine he's making any major musical statements dressed like peter pan and traipsing through knottingham forrest jamming on zither with maid marrian,

and uli may have imbibed one to many cups of shroom tea gazing into his anhk-encrusted crystal ball channeling hendrix to make music familiar to those dwelling in the milky way constellation. and i'd rather hear alan greenspan sing.

schenker still seems to be able to fan away the dead neuron fog long enough to blaze.
